MQM rollover question

Hi, everybody, I have determined the flights I will likely do for the rest of the year. It looks as if I could go over 125,000 miles but not by much. I will not have the requisite MQDs or the AMEX spend to qualify for Diamond. So I am wondering about rollover for next year....(yes, I know rollover is not guaranteed)......Let’s say I hit 130,000 miles. Will I get 5,000 rollover miles (the difference between 130,000 and 125,000 miles) or 55,000 rollover miles (the difference between 130,000 and 75,000 miles)? I hope my post is clear. I called DL last night and the agent said I would get 55,000 rollover miles. But she sounded unsure of herself and I trust the forum members here more to give me the correct answer. Thank you!

You would get 55,000 rollover MQM's. You rollover whatever MQM's you earn above the MQM requirements for your earned status level.

Unless your home address is outside the US or you are exempt via the DL AMEX card spend you will get a rollover of your excess MQMs (but not segments). So if your MQDs are $3,000 then you will be Silver and rollover 105,000 miles (130,000-25,000).

To summarize, you get rollover MQMs above the earned status level.

If you've fully qualified for PM, then all MQMs above PM rollover to the next year.

I am fully qualified for Platinum for 2020. So I could get, for example, 55,000 rollover miles if I hit 130,000 MQMs by the end of 2019?

Correct, you rollover MQM's in excess of the medallion status level you've achieved.

How close are you to DM MQDs? You might want to consider whether you want to go for DM or stick with PM and a lot of rollover.

I am short 7,954 MQDs as of now. Since all travel is in my own dime it is unlikely I will spend almost $8000 on air travel the rest of this year. I would rather get a lot of rollover than reach DM. This year is kind of a fluke; I was able to buy three D1 tix to Europe this summer by taking advantage of relatively cheap Z fares.

Depending on your other travel, you may want to explore flying a level 1 partner for the 40% of mileage MQD earn.
I found a KL business fare last April - LAX-AMS-BKK RT for about $2200 that earned $6800 MQD.
And last Dec MU business JFK-PVG-TPE-PVG-LAX that cost $2300 and earned $5885 MQD.
Partner flights have been great for me for MQD.
Or take the rollover.

Depending on how much you fly next year, it may be beneficial to stay as PM and get the 55K rollover. This will allow you an easier time for Plat status next year too.

OP still needs to make the PM MQDs next year unless he/she can spend $25,000 on a DL AmEx card.

Except that if OP is at 130K and has met the Diamond spend level, then only 5K will be rolled over, not 55K.

OP - you have to be intentional with what you want to do. You have to decide if you'd prefer an easy Platinum again (or head start to Diamond) next year versus Diamond starting this year, but expiring in early 2021 (if you earned it next year, it would expire in early 2022).

If you want to stay Platinum this year, you have to purposely not meet either of the Diamond requirements for status. Once you meet both MQMs or MQSs and the spend requirement/waiver, you are Diamond and will only roll over MQMs in excess of Diamond MQMs, meaning whatever you have above 125,000.

OP specifically said in multiple posts above that he/she would not reach Diamond MQDs but would achieve 130k MQMs. As such, 55k MQMs would roll over from his/her EOY achieved PM status.

I have a related question - do MQMs rollover indefinitely, or only after the year that they were earned?

Say this year (2019), I earn 75k MQMs, but only have enough MQDs to be silver/FO. Then I'd get 50k rollover for MQMs for 2020.
Then in 2020, let's say I earn 25k MQMs (so I again have a total of 75k MQMs), but again only have enough MQD spend for silver.
In 2021, do I then get 50k MQM rollover again? Or do I get less because some of those miles were earned in 2019, and not in 2020?

Rollover keeps going. DL doesn't limit it like Hilton does for night credits.
