There was a guy on TV yesterday who said he had waited in the PreCheck line for 45 minutes and it didn't move, then he was being taken in a small group to the security place that's used by arriving international passengers with onward connections at MSP. I think he might have had CLEAR too, but it wasn't clear.

ADDED: My itinerary for next week has a very mild notice about the MSP security changes, basically saying that it's now PreCheck South and everyone else North. There's no mention of possibly needing to allow more time or get to the airport earlier than usual.

The SkyPriority counter lines didn’t look bad, although I didn’t get down that way too much today. The North elite line is marked twice, so pretty easy to find. I spent a certain amount of time walking up and down the North lines, and occasionally the South line, making sure passengers who were elite or PreCheck were not in the longer line. The CLEAR pax always seemed to know to look for that line, whereas the occasional person who gets PreCheck randomly doesn’t always realize it. I’m not certain whether there is a CLEAR+Elite combination. There were a lot of CLEAR staff at North today and what looked like new CLEAR kiosks.

South with PreCheck never looked very long.

The volunteers did receive information about the changes and requests (pleadings!) for volunteers to sign up for today and especially for 5am-noon. I wasn’t heroic enough to overcome the fact that I’m not a morning person; I signed up for 12-4 but found that it was busy and interesting enough to stay on for a double shift. In addition to dealing with the checkpoint changes, it was a busy day with lots of situations where passengers needed extra information and help. As a volunteer, today was the kind of day I most enjoy, with lots of different problems (some simple, some complex) to be solved, a certain amount of chaos, and lots of confused passengers.

How was the regular (non Clear non Precheck) line? Trying to gauge how much time to allow for my flight out Sunday afternoon. I'm also curious as to whether or not things have gotten better.

The regular line was really long at times, stretching back to mid-terminal. However, it always moved quite fast. Definitely allow more time than usual, though.

Line this morning for non precheck non clear looked horrible. Reaching more then halfway through the terminal. Clear with precheck took two min ;)

What if one doesn't get PreCheck for the trip? How is CLEAR with elite line privileges at North?

curl Aug 22, 2019 5:58 am

There were definitely waits longer than 30 minutes Monday. Personal experience - about 1:45pm Monday: North checkpoint (my traveling companion was there) = 40 minutes South checkpoint = 7 minutes (TSA Pre not Clear) This was mid afternoon so way less crazy than morning. I waited longer in the delta Sky Priority baggage check than security.
Headed back to MSP Saturday morning. Now that I’m worried about. :o

BTW I've never been able to make any sense of the standard advice for USA airports to arrive two hours early for a domestic flight and three hours for international. The domestic and international check in and security lines are exactly the same, and at most the check in (if not OLCI) and bag drop deadlines are thirty minutes earlier for international. It doesn't take more than a few minutes to check the passport unless there's some major problem (and if you've forgotten the passport or it's expired, an hour certainly isn't enough time to fix that). The requirement (which varies slightly across carriers) to be at the gate thirty minutes in advance for international and fifteen for domestic is taken care of by the difference in check in and bag drop deadlines. So any reasonable calculation would suggest arriving thirty-five to forty minutes earlier for international.

Probably because most casual travelers are morons and planning for 3 hours out does allow most people to still make their flight if they run into some kind of major issue like a blocked road or forgotten item. The cynic in me also things it's to boost airport concession revenue,

I once arrived at JFK without my passport at 2 hours out. Thankfully since I only live 20 minutes away I was able to rectify and make my flight.

Someone on TV news is saying that even with both CLEAR and PreCheck, an additional two hours should be allowed for TSA security at MSP. I don't understand how/why CLEAR doesn't seem to be working unless hundreds of people have decided to sign up for CLEAR this morning as a way to pay them $179 or whatever to avoid missing a flight, but I wouldn't think that so many people would even be aware of CLEAR.

I was at LGA once where there was a 30 minute wait for PreCheck. In those 30 minutes I saw at least 20 people sign up for CLEAR on the spot just so they could make their flight.

Any reports from MSP today? Thursday was supposed to be busier than Monday, according to TSA officials...

So far looks to be okay today. Comment under the main tweet suggests 5 minute wait at Precheck lines this morning, no mention of regular line. A Twitter search also shows activity much quieter than Monday.

At this point there are 5 people in line at the south checkpoint for pre-check. Friday, 11:30.

CarmenOM Aug 23, 2019 3:56 pm

I left MSP at 1pm but unfortunately did not have a chance to post until now.

The PreCheck and CLEAR PreCheck lines at South were not bad. The CLEAR regular and SkyPriority/Elite/First Class lines at North were not bad.

The regular line stretched from North all the way back to the Delta baggage drop area, including three sections along the way where the lines were configured to wind back and forth. I have never seen anything like it.

The baggage drop and self-check/bag drop lines at Delta were long.

I didn’t at that time get a chance to check the SkyPriority baggage drop area but when I arrived at 8:30am the lines there were long.

The outgoing passenger numbers projected for Sunday 8/25 are similar to today but with higher volume in the late afternoon/early evening. My guess is that this is the last big travel weekend of the summer. Anyone traveling Sunday should allow extra time before departure.

Less than 5 minutes at South (CLEAR/Precheck) at about 4:30 PM. They added red arrows to the South/North signs at the departure entry doors to direct pax to each checkpoint, which is something that should've been a no brainer to begin with!

There’s also new signage on the Transit level.

Any updates about how bad the lines are?

I was at MSP from 4-8 today (Sunday). While there were a couple of lulls, during much of the time the regular (non PreCheck, non CLEAR) lines were all the way back to the Delta baggage drop area, with three areas with mazes to wind the lines back and forth. The lines always moved fast, but they were soooooo long. The lines never looked bad at the PreCheck South checkpoint. When I checked at North, the CLEAR and SkyPriority lines were not long, but I heard that there were times during the day when the SkyPriority/First Class/OAL elite line was long. A separate wheelchair entrance has been added at North, so that passengers in wheelchairs do not enter the SkyPriority line.

The Delta bag drop line was also very long. For reasons I did not determine, Delta closed the self-check area around 6pm, which added to the regular bag drop line.

This weekend was heavy end-of-the-summer travel for many people as a lot of schools and universities start classes next week. But there is still Labor Day weekend......
