DL 1778 on 7/10/2019

My brother was traveling yesterday on DL 1778 from MEM-ATL and had the most unique experience that I thought I would share. Once he boarded in MEM the flight was delayed due to a swarm of bees directly on top of the refueling panel. The delay was while they waited on a bee keeper to come and get rid of the swarm of over 1000 bees. He stated after about 30 minutes a guy showed up in shorts and a t-shirt with a "Shopvac" like vacuum, sucked the bees into it, and off they went.

He was unable to get a picture due to where he was sitting. Luckily they weren't too late and he made his connection with some time to spare. Anyone ever heard of anything like that happening?

Why would bees be attracted to an airplane?

Perhaps they've heard of Delta's world-class service and generous first class upgrades among other frequent flyer benefits?

Google "Jet fuel and bees" - lots of articles describing why bees are attracted to jet fuel.

Was this a direct flight to JNB? I'm wondering whether these were Africanized killer bees just trying to get home and having to change aircraft in ATL since MEM is no longer a hub.
