Meal selection before upgrade clears

Have applied an RUC for my upcoming JFK - PDX segment this Wednesday. On Sunday (72 hrs out), I received an email inviting me to select my first class meal, but the upgrade hasn't cleared yet. I still show (SU) as my class of service. "Upgrade Status:Upgrade Waitlisted" has disappeared from beneath MANAGE COMPLEMENTARY UPGRADES. The RUC still shows as OPEN. One final oddity - if I try to change my seat, I can't gain access to the seat map. I get a message that it is view only, but it doesn't even show up.

Is this a preview of an ultimate upgrade? Is Delta being proactive in case I get the upgrade? Has this happened to anyone else?

Sounds like you have likely cleared and the ticket needs manual intervention to get reissued. A quick call to the Diamond/Platinum line will likely get everything straightened out and confirmed.

That was it. It required a manual reissue. Thanks for the insight.

What would have happened if OP didn’t call in?

They wouldn't have been able to check-in online, at which point presumably they contact DL or go to the counter and it gets fixed then and there.

If you mean, could you lose the upgraded seat, I'm not actually sure...

You could lose the flight if you get to the airport late-ish and the counter agents aren't able to fix the problem (reissue the ticket) in time.
