Was JFK having its own weather or other IROPs problems? I know the UA "hard landing" apparently caused EWR to lose a runway (as well as close the airport temporarily?), with EWR flights being diverted to other airports in the NYC and beyond area. Maybe NYC ATC was too busy to handle such a diversion.
I also imagine it's a lot easier to find hotels and transportation in DTW than JFK.
So for all the reasons outlined that makes DTW a no brainer over JFK.

Several posters above were commenting how surprised they are that IND-CDG exists when they would've imagined DL to create other TATL routes first. This comment provides additional information about why the route exists which may help explain their surprise.
