Checking thru luggage on separate tickets
Hi all. Apologies if this is a repeat but I searched and could not find this answer (I am somewhat search impaired though). Are there any tricks to get Delta to combine two separate PNRs? I am repositioning to JFK for a TATL and have separate tickets (both with DL) and would like them to be combined so I can do one check in and check bags just once. But mostly, I'm just lazy don't want to exit and re-enter security at JFK. I have done the HUCB but no agent is giving me any love. Any suggestions, or do I just suck it up, put on my bug boy pants, and live through the consequences of buying separate tickets (I don't know how to turn down a $1200 round trip J fare from JFK - AMS).
This is the first thread I ever started on FT. I feel so techno-sexy!

Simply tell DL when checking in that you have a second reservation and wish to check bags through to those flights also. DL BAG AGENT WILL TYPE A FEW THINGS, AND BAGS WILL BE TAGGED ALL THE WAY. No way to combine PNRs, but as shown, it doesn't matter.

Good news: You can check luggage through on separate DL tickets without combining PNRs (which, was correctly noted, can't be done.)
It seems like this section gets repeated at least once a week.

Exceptions
In cases as noted below, when more than one ticket is presented, Delta will continue to through-check baggage from the origin to the destination.- An entire journey (itinerary) consisting of Delta-marketed / Delta-operated flights
- SkyMiles Award plus a ticket with Delta-marketed / Delta-operated flights
- Delta ticket plus a ticket on the Delta partner airlines listed below:
- Aeromexico (AM)
- Air France (AF)
- Alitalia (AZ)
- China Eastern (MU)
- GOL (G3)
- Jet Airways (9W)
- KLM (KL)
- Korean Air (KE)
- Virgin Atlantic (VS)
- Virgin Australia (VA)
- Delta ticket plus a:
- SkyTeam pass ticket
- Ticket with travel on a Visit USA (VUSA) fare
- Connection to a Delta charter flight

Also, even though not on the official list, DL agents generally will through check to any Skyteam airline. In fact they'll even do it with non-Skyteam airlines a number of times. Not sure if your question invovled separate reservations.

OP should bring a copy of this plus hard copies of both PNRs and both tickets (with ticket numbers). It might be necessary to ask for a supervisor if the check in agent doesn't know how to check the bags through. Also, examine the bag tags or claim check carefully to make sure that all flights are correctly listed in order, with the final destination being prominent on the tag.

Just make sure to arrive at the airport a little earlier than usual. It shouldn't take more than a minute at the counter, but last time I did something similar (though a little more complex: mainline carrier to alliance partner, on different PNRs), it took a lot of perseverance on my end and a call to their internal helpdesk on their end to make it work.

Concerning the AMS=OTP example., it is not one PNR (both portions purchased separately). I'm confused about clearing immigration at AMS and customs at OTP. If luggage goes direct to OTP don't we just go through transit line at AMS ? Sorry for being such a dork on this, but I'm naturally concerned about arriving OTP sans luggage.

As for immigration and customs, I forgot that Romania, while part of the EU, isnt part of the Schengen area. You'll simply go from your arrival gate to departure gate. Coming from the US/CANADA youll be exempt from needing to reclear security.

"Several years ago" and today and now are two different things, especially in the airline industry.
