I also flew Aeroflot which also doesn't even interline on a separate Aeroflot ticket such a major inconvenience

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but could not find a better place to post,

Will DL be willing to check thru ATL-ORD to a separate SK ORD-CPH-ARN ticket?

I would assume the answer is no, but I would be happy if anyone had insight on these scenarios.

No chance of that happening!

I figured. Luckily I have a long connection anyway so there is plenty of time to pick up the bag.

Technically, no. However if you ask (especially if you have status) they may say yes.

No. This is not only separate tickets, but across two alliances. The chances are close to nil.

SAT agents I know will for Diamonds. My comment above is based on frequently checking bags SAT-JFK on DL to AY JFK-HEL-BKK. Never hurts to at least ask.

So according to flyerCO it is possible but not allowed.

Thanks for the tip! I won't hold my breath but I will give it a try if I take DL on ATL-ORD.

Based on my understanding of the interline agreement I feel confident that this separately-booked ticket should work: ABQ - LAX (DL); LAX - PPT (AF).

Since the LAX - PPT is international and my fare includes one checked bag, should I expect that the ABQ - LAX domestic part would also be free, or is that subject to Delta's baggage fee?

Separate tickets don’t get you free baggage on DL.

I would not raise the fee issue at ABQ. If you are asked to pay, DL may correctly collect the fee for its domestic ticket. A decent chance that the check-in agent does not. The interline agreement has nothing to do with either the fee or DL's policy regarding separate tickets, e.g. yes to ST and no to others (even where it has an interline agreement).

Larger issue is that AF is unmerciful on rebooking if there are separate tickets and you no show. Give yourself 2-3x the MCT.

Not sure whether his has been said, but I often put together 2 separate DL tickets when paying out of pocket for BC, as in domestic A to B (F or MC) where B is a busy gateway overseas with cheaper BC tickets due to competition, and then a separate BC ticket from B to C. I have never had problems checking luggage all the way through starting in 'A' or returning from 'C' (even from France!!) - and further more, the few times the return flight has been late enough to misconnect on my ticket from 'B' to 'A' I have always gotten a curtesy rebooking if both flights are Delta coded, though once or twice had the DL agent tell me that they 'didn't have to do that'. When going from 'A' to 'B', I always have a contingency plan in case the first flight is delayed or canceled as in taking an earlier flight with a next flight making it in time or being ready to gate purchase a ticket to 'B' on another airline (had to do that once on UA) - Works for me, but you have to be prepared for IOPs and be ready to roll with it.

David, just wondering if you paid a bag fee when checking in at ABQ? Thanks

Starting just under 2 years ago DL and ST implemented program to rebook passenger that misconnect on separate tickets. As long as you provided sufficient MCT as if on one ticket you're protected. All ST airline tickets can be taken over by DL under this program.

Of course agent has to be aware of programs existence.

Back in 2019 DL and AF went above and beyond with this program. I had a DCA-JFK ticket and a separate JFK-CDG with AF with 3 hours between flights. Ground stop at DCA due to storm in NY area delayed my flight but still arrived within MCT, however, the airplane needed to be towed and it took over an hour. In the meantime, I was on the phone with an agent and after being on hold for quite some time, the agent told me AF was expecting me to arrive and instructed me to get to T1 as soon as possible. Deplaned at T-30, Made it to the AF check-in counter at T-15, they indeed received the message that I was on the way, had my BP already printed and escorted me to the front of the TSA line. Gate agent was also paged and we walked down the jet bridge together as she was closing the door right behind me.
