Despite the comments above that suggest people traveling with bikes is a rare, almost freakishly rare occurrence, there has been a huge growth in the number of mountain bikers who want to bring their bikes with them when traveling.
.

Pressure is on United. Their fees, and Lufthansa, are crazy. BA is also free.

I see bikes at the airport all the time. Coupled bikes, that fit in a 62 inch bag, are very common.

SAS does bikes for free but it requires pre-booking. VS was free already too, IIRC.

Glad to see DL copy AA in this way.

I anticipate I’ll be flying bikes across the oceans a lot in the next twelve months. :)

I remember reading this thread back in March and thinking how dumb and greedy it was for any airline to charge a fee for a bike that was no larger than any other bags that are accepted.
Good to see the policy done away with.

You might be able to. On AS recently I was bringing an empty bike case one way because I was going to buy a used bike from a friend and bring it back in the case. It's a large semi-rigid soft sided case (an old BikeProUSA case), so it's definitely oversized. They just checked it in like a bike, no problem, though technically it was just empty luggage. I've also flown AS with other soft cases that don't say "bike" anywhere, and they just check them in and don't even ask.

It certainly was dumb and greedy.

We fewer checked bags most airlines have plenty of space in the hold. Being able to charge a normal bag fee is better than getting nothing, especially as the bikes are light and the riders are athletes who are usually lighter than a normal passenger. These days it is all about weight.

This is probably the only time this has ever been said.

It’s not technically prohibited, but it’s common to see passengers fill the empty space in their ski bags with clothes. Some airlines have rules that say only skis/snowboards can go in the bag, but Delta doesn’t have the last time I checked. I guess that’s one way to avoid size limitations. Just use your snowboard bags for packing clothes... just try to make them at least a little rigidly shaped. I wouldn’t recommend this though.

My ski bags are always holding some clothes. As long as I’ve said the bags are skis and well padded for the trip, I’ve never had AA, DL, or UA make an issue of that. And yes I’ve managed to stuff ski pants, gloves, and coats into them along with my skis. Anyone handling the ski bags should be able to make out that there is something long and hard in them that approximates what you’d expect skis to be like.

50 or 70 lb limit?

A couple of questions about the new bike policy. From Delta:
  • Standard baggage allowance and fees based on cabin and travel region apply
  • Bicycles weighing over 50 lbs. will be charged the applicable excess weight fee
Wondering if the 50lb limit becomes 70lb if you are silver or higher medallion member or flying first class, i.e when the standard baggage allowance increases from 50 to 70lbs? Anyone have any experience with this? TIA
