Agreed. Totally my fault for delaying until the last minute. I thought about grabbing the amex reserve card deal back in September for the 10K mqm bonus, but spending 3000 in a week now is a bit of a stretch. Wonder if there is a way I could trade 10k regular miles (or appropriate amount) for 3700 mqms with a member that has gifting permission?

Welcome to FT, GT Hill, we hope you learn a lot here and make some friends!
As described by FlyinHawaiian, you should post in the mileage run thread to get some ideas.
But by the by, you could take a weekend trip to Los Angeles the last weekend of the year for $487. That's 3892 MQMs.

I tend to think you'd be better off snagging the Reserve on Jan 1 and just knocking out the other 15k MQM/$3k MQD early in the year and then have Silver through 2021 and in the interim the perks of the Reserve are virtually the same as being Silver -- especially if you are ATL-based (in which case an upgrade clearing would be a true unicorn)

do you want silver because you have enough travel to justify it next year, or do you want it just because you're actually within spitting distance? out of ATL I would say your chances of F upgrades are almost basically always zero if you are flying at anything considered a normal time. are you even going to travel enough next year to make it worth it? just things to consider before blowing $400 and wasting a day on a plane

Welcome aboard!
Also you will learn by reading these boards that ATL is one the most heavily traveled airports by DM/PM/GM skymiles members that you will be competing with for seats and upgrades.
Keep this in mind in your future travels and medallion status decisions.
Happy Landings!
