Delta pilots using an App to reduce turbulence?

Saw this article and thought it was rather interesting.
https://www.inc.com/chris-matyszczyk...s-noticed.html

A few weeks ago I was thinking to my self how we don’t seem to hit crazy turbulence (or at least the frequency has reduced quite a bit) that often anymore.

Has as anyone else felt the same in the last 2+ years?

Not really. But it's often unavoidable...

I think turbulence is about the same as in the past. Thanks for sharing the article!

Funny. Last flight we were warned about turbulence FAs were sent to their seats. Seatbelt sign was on. Nothing happened.

Major airlines have improved technology to plan routes so as to not only avoid turbulence but also minimize (within reason) fuel burn. There can be a conflict between these two goals, for instance because flying a longer route or flying faster to makeup time generally requires more fuel.

More, and more current, weather info is useful to pilots. The company-issued tablets are one way to disseminate it.

They have apps that control the weather?!

Cool!

P.S. It’s not “turbulence”, it’s “rough air.”

What are you? An FO?

A recent post on TPG's blog actually went into more detail than the Inc article on what Delta does with their team of meteorologists and how they try to avoid turbulence. It's more than just an app, there are sensors and analytics involved. Cool stuff from Delta.

My airline does provide something similar, and we have found it useful at times.

As a passenger I have a love/hate relationship with https://www.turbulenceforecast.com/ - even though I fly constantly I really don't enjoy that "light chop" so I obsess over the maps and the pilot reports. In flight I will have that site up alongside flightaware so I can see our progress versus turbulent areas.

Do you find that turbulence website to be accurate? I just started using it. Not sure how accurate it truly is.
