GUC Clearing?
how soon before departure does the GA clear GUCs that are on the standby list for international flights? Is there a standard time or more kind of adhoc

There isn't a standard but generally about an hour before departure. Gate agent won't be able to clear anything until sales are closed, which for international flights is at T-90 IIRC.

Yup, my last GUC cleared at T-24. I have another one now waiting to clear for NRT-ATL

If it cleared at T-24 then that's clearing via regular upgrade inventory being released by revenue management. OP is asking about clearing at the gate.

Most GAs will start to clear upgrades and standbys as soon as they're certain that there will be seats for the people. If the flight is very empty, the GA could begin to do this upon arrival at the gate.

Sometimes they clear at T-1 minute when I prove all of the GA's arguments wrong for why the gate information screen says there is one unassigned seat in D1...despite the BS reasons they are telling me.

One person from my office recently told me there was one D1 seat left and he clear at T-30.

How does gate clearing work when the flight is from an outstation with contract employees? Would they even know how to clear a GUC?

They should be able to, and if not, most outstations still have 1 station manager or red coat who's a DL employee and can handle this.

The real outlier has been AMS, where DL doesn't even pretend that GAs will process GUC upgrades at the gate.
