How strict is delta’s weight rules

How strict is delta’s rules regarding luggage weight

That really depends on the agent.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Bag weight is one of the most subjective things agents have to deal with.

Based on my experience, I wouldn't worry about <1 pound over. But I think all you're going to get here is anecdotes.

Pretty strict IME. As stated above, some agents seem to care more than others.

IME, they are more strict in Europe than other regions. But that could be totally idiosyncratic. If you’re just going with carryon and obtain a boarding pass without seeing an agent, you can avoid having your bags weighed altogether. I do this 99% of the time.

They are fairly lenient with status passengers. Do you have status, how much overweight, where are you flying from and to, how large is the bag, big and heavy is a bad combo

If you can get it to the gate and ask for free gate check - you could check the Titanic FREEEEEEE :p

Do you mean the checked bag or carry on? The thing im curious is do they look at your carry on bag dimensions or they don't care? I have a laptop messenger bag that is kind of bulky because i put laptop and many things in it so it looks huge. But jetblue never said anything to me about my carry on. So i assume delta would not care either?

Didn't want to make a new thread on this. But what is the cost of a checked bag on delta internationally? Online it shows 25 dollars but on delta website it shows 30 dollars?

Where are you flying?

Europe is free in Main Cabin, but Basic Economy is $60 each way.

For Canada, Mexico, and many Caribbean destinations, if your flight was ticketed before 1p (ET) September 19, 2018, it is $25, but if it was ticked after, it is $30.

Hi there. US to Mexico.

Wait so delta just did the price increase pretty recently? But jetblue and american airlines are still 25 dollars right? Why would they do that?

Yes, this may be getting OT, but Delta increased their fees on Sept 19, American on Sept 20, and Jetblue on August 27 to make 1st checked bag $30 on all three airlines.

Tried to gate check at MSY once and was told I would have to pay a bunch of money because it was overweight. So I went inside to the ticket counter and it was checked for free with no questions. I was GM at the time.

What is your specific experience in leniency?

I have never been shown leniency. I had two bags, one 51 lb and one 52 lb, and was charged $100 each for them at LAX (traveling to SYD). This is when I was a Diamond. I tried to charm my way into them at least letting 1 bag go, but there was no sympathy.

Unfortunately this was work equipment that couldn't be lightened, I fly with it on VA all the time with a 23 kg limit (50.7 lb) and they've always let me fly without a fee. Not saying DL should give me special treatment, but I always fly VA now when I need to carry this equipment with me.

That's a bummer that you had such a stickler of an agent. As a DM, any time my checked bag has been within a few lbs. over 50 lbs (across an array of DL stations), the agent has never said a word (other than an occasional comment that they need to get a "heavy" tag).
