Delta Raises Main Cabin Domestic Checked Bag Fee to $30

Up from $25, joining with United and JetBlue. I expect American to follow soon.

Gotta keep Wall St happy.

That happened faster than I thought it would.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens at the next economic downturn. With a $30 bag fee and a $30 fare premium to be able to choose a seat, I wonder how many people are going to be wondering why am I flying DL (or AA or UA) again?

In fairness, $25 in 2008 (when bag fees were introduced) is $29.86 today 2018. But.. I still hate bag fees. They've made flying so much more miserable with the fight for overhead bin space.

The 1st checked bag fee started at $15 in 2008. Later raised to $25.

Ugh, this really did happen faster than I thought. Stupid United.... I guess these are the times we live in.

Fortunately, if you bought your tickets before 1pm ET today, you only pay $25.

They really should make bag fees variable. Does it really make sense to charge the same to check a bag from ATL - SAV as it does from JFK - HNL?

Ysitincoach Sep 19, 2018 12:55 pm

Good.

Now please charge for carryons.

Just more junk fees... basically like the 'resort fee' or 'destination fee' that many hotels are charging now for little to no benefit.

At least you can avoid baggage fees by not bringing any baggage. Any fee you can't avoid should be included in the basic rate or be illegal.

It probably had to happen this fast, or else United would have lost sales and maybe reverted it before DL (and likely AA soon) could copycat.

I doubt many people (at least that the airlines care about) are picking deciding between AA, DL, and UA over $5 on the bag fee. The people they want, either A: Don't pay bag fees anyhow with status, or B: Don't pay bag fees out of pocket because they expense it to the company.

A few people might make that choice at least in the first few days after it's been announced, but I doubt it makes a long term impact even if AA stays at $25.
