While the above is true, Delta only got the 717s when AirTran was bought out by Southwest and they needed to divest the 717s to maintain a 737 fleet only. It all turned out rather well for Delta, but the corporate vision to move to mainline jets was facilitated as much by Southwest/AirTran as Delta.
Umm, DL still made a strategic decision to buy them. There are hundreds of airlines in the world that could have purchased them. Yes, DL needed an opportunity to buy. But when that opportunity came along, DL jumped on it (unlike every other airline in the world)

Yes, I must have missed it because the gate area looked like any other day.

I thought I was on ship N104DU since the captain said this was the fourth one out and I thought the first one was registered as N100DU. Thanks for the correction!
Using your analogy, if you thought the first one was registered N100DU, then N101DU would be #2 , N102DU would be #3 , N103DU would be #4 and N104DU would be #5 ! In actual fact the registrations begin with N101DU and continue from there. Refer to the WiKi for further info.

And the afternoon DFW-LGA goes MX on the fourth day. Even if it will be more reliable, seems like the A220 is not worth seeking out for now (and may even be worth avoiding).

I was on that flight too. Having IFE/WiFi/Power go INOP on day 2 was definitely a teething moment. i tried getting some points from Delta for this; they said no. I didn’t pursue it further.

Alright, so a quick review from first. I was not happy with the product.

Seats were passable and had a bit of bounce, but I wouldn’t call them heads and tails above main (and I bet Comfort+ isn’t that different; we’ll see on Thursday).

Trays didn’t extend far enough. Someone had trouble setting it in front of them because of this.

Legroom was not good. This is the first time in a while that someone reclining into me in first bothered me. I had trouble using my MacBook (the 12” one, which is tiny) when the person in front of me reclined.

Legroom was not great. Row 10 in comfort+ had WAY more.

It was more difficult to stow my backpack under my forward seat than it usually is. It’s a 15L backpack; usually very easy to stow.

I would call the experience cramped. I prefer first in the E175 RJ or the MD80. Unless you need a bigger seat or (not a lot of) food, I would stick to Comfort+ for this aircraft. If you need legroom, I would straight up avoid it.

A220 question

Currently flying in a mad dog on AA to Indy. About 30 minutes ago we taxied past a new DL 220 at DFW. Sharp plane!

What competitor is this plane targeted against? At first glance it appears to be similar sized to a 175 or 195.

It's bigger than either of those, at 109 seats in F, Comfort+, and main cabins.

A220s will replace E75/CR9 routes, which will be shuffled down to reduce the count of CR2 routes.

Out of jets still actively being made (or about to be) and have a future, the E195-E2 is the only real competitor.

The 717 has been out of production for well over a decade, and the 737-700 and A319 are at the end of their effective lives (deliveries are in low single digits for both). The 737MAX7 is too large, and too much of a plane since it is designed to carry much more of a plane (a 7MAX10).

When the BD-500 was being conceived back in 2004 the 717 was still in production. As for airframe competitors, operators look at currently-in-production as well as out-of-production but still in-service airframes, therefore the 717 is still considered to be a competitive airframe to the BD-500, same goes for the 737-700. DL has demonstrated in the past that they are more than happy to consider the secondary airframe market instead of purchasing new.

The 737 Max 7 is bigger than the BD-500-1A10 (A220-100) but is right in the sights of the BD-500-1A11 (A220-300).

Fair, but the writing was on the wall for the 717 in 2004 (Boeing formerly announced the end of the program in January 2005, but it was pretty clear their plans as early as 2003/2004).


The 717 is great for the operators that currently use them. There are not enough to go around, and it is clear the current operators will run them into the ground. So, if you don't already have them, you are not going to get them.


I agree that second-hand 737-700s are an option (although lack the passenger comfort benefits of the A220) - obviously trading capital expenditures with higher fuel costs. That said, Delta is probably one of the few majors that is willing to acquire old airframes in mass. I don't see AA or United going and buying a bunch of second-hand 737-700s to compete.

The A220 fills a nitch that needed to be filled - and it fills it with comfort. I'm very happy about it overall. I wish I flew more of the routes that it will cover.
