Was looking at tickets to NYC over the holidays and noticed that DL is operating the A220 on SLC-JFK. Looks like they might be testing out the A220 on longer mid cons ... westbound JFK-SLC is a 5 hour flight...

the plane has the range, so no issue there, but still a bit surprised by this. Is it an extra flight to accommodate extra demand from skiers heading to the slopes?

I'm surprised about the range. Was under the impression DL had range limited A220s based on initial purchase price and reporting though perhaps they've reworked that agreement in their subsequent adds to the original order (would be easy to alter if initial range limitation was a software based limitation).

hub to hub longish haul, you’d think would have larger aircraft so you might be right.

For the dates I looked at it, the A220 arrives JFK at 2:45am and departs JFK at 5:30am. I'm guessing that demand is reduced at those hours

I'm just posting an article man, and not making any commentary on its content or conclusion. As for being able to "fathom" how the aircraft could work, I an probably the only person on FT that can really "fathom" just how the aircraft can work.

Any changes for range, thrust, MTOW, etc are all software changes, some of which are just parameter changes to a couple of lines of XML, and then building a new APM file which gets uploaded to the aircraft as part of a maintenance action.

Starting next June, DL has a regular SEA-ATL run scheduled on the A220 as well. Seems to be extra capacity on Monday afternoons rather than a permanent switch for the route, and probably assists with aircraft rotation as well, but... definitely a surprising route to find it on.

I'm starting to think that the route planners in Atlanta want to deploy the plane on long routes that are either thin or competitive.

Yeah, usually that’s been the strategy, but SEA-ATL is neither of those things - DL has a near monopoly except for the AS flight, and a huge number of people fly the route each day.

I would have expected to see something like a SEA-RDU-ATL rotation of the A220 instead. But since this is just once a week, it’s likely more of a one off rotation home to base for maintenance and stopgap extra capacity on a busy day than anything else, I think.

Well, the A220-300s are scheduled for delivery starting next year, so we'll probably see some more changes, and next summer is still far off in the future. The most recent schedule updates have shown domestic capacity expansion for DL in SEA.

SEA-AUS/BNA/ORD/IAD are also good candidates for the A220. Those get downgauged to the A319 in the winter time.

I have to wonder if Delta had any influence in the Air France firm order for 60 jets (+30 options, +30 acquisition rights)

Highly doubt it. Airbus is a French company, they have an especially close relationship with AF, who currently operates the A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, A340, A350, A380. Can't imagine these two French companies needed Americans to influence this deal.

Anyway, the only reason DL would care is if they were flying the A220 into France and they wanted AF to support with parts/maintenance. And that's not happening.
