1973 Delta ad for flights to Florida and the Bahamas from NYC

I was going through some old newspapers and discovered this 1973 DL ad featuring 747's and DC-10's for their flights to Florida from LGA and JFK.

Cool! Interestingly, you can see the whole magazine at Google:
https://books.google.com/books?id=Bq...0delta&f=false

Also interestingly, and perhaps related, there is an old airport in Coweta County, Georgia called Clint Odom Airport. I did not see anything pointing to our intrepid Capt. Clint Odom pictured, but the former airport is southwest of Atlanta, Delta's home.

That Holiday Inn in Freeport is still operating in 1973 mode.

IIRC, 747s and DC-10s didn't last long with Delta.

Looking at a random middle of the week date Oct 10, LGA/JFK to MIA is still only $83 for an E fare. Makes you appreciate how expensive air travel was 45 years ago...or how cheap it is today.

Just learned something new...

- DL had B747's
- DL had DC-10's (I spent many hours on DL/s Tri Stars L1011/L1015, but do not recall any DC-10's)
- DL flew to JFK even before they acquired PAA TATL routes

Nice...

Crazy copywriting. Just like today, someone in Delta's advertising department (or agency) thinks the overuse of trademarks and (TM) is cool.

It was pre-deregulation. Carriers couldn't compete on route network (routes were assigned) or price (CAB set, on average, a 7% profit with 55% load factors) so carriers competed on service and branding.

Here's the list of 14 DC-10s that DL operated:

They also operated 17 MD-11s:

Color me stupid that I had no idea 741's and DC-10's could take off from LGA.

Never heard the term "Wide-Ride" before. Nice marketing term for a widebody jet!

Very cool stuff... thank you for sharing.

The DC-10's did operate out of LGA but the 747's did not. The 747's did operate out of JFK. This was a good advertisement to read. Air travel sure has changed. "Wide-Ride" aircraft and "Royal Service" must have been a nice way to travel between New York and Florida.

LGA handles 767-300 and is actually approved for use by 767-400 aircraft. It's all about stage length.
