Damaged Baggage Question

Did a BUF-ATL-IAH yesterday and got a surprise when I got to IAH. I will let the pictures do the justice here. My bad for keeping my laptop in there but I already had 2nd laptop in the backpack so didnt want to make it too heavy and/or I haven't really had any issues in the past when I let my laptop in there but what do u guys think in terms of putting in a claim? Will delta replace the bag? I did report this on arrival and the person helping me said that it looks like it got stuck on the belt and just tore the side where was no zip (btw, the bag was not locked). He gave me a tag to send it in. S

Secondly, I booked this ticket with miles but paid the 11.20 fees using my amex. Will amex cover anything? I suspect the answer is no but thot I did ask.

They'll pay for a new bag. However laptop is excluded. BTW bags like this are supposed to be put in trays for this reason. Did checkin agent do that?

No clue on AMEX coverage.

not trying to get your hopes up, but it may be worth asking if DL will do something about your laptop. They may offer you an alternative form of currency (miles or an eCredit)

Not saying it will happen or should happen but of all the airlines I have dealt with DL by FAR has the best baggage issue team. I have NEVER (knock on wood) had a bad experience with them and overall can say they are the best department at DL.

As for the bag yes they should compensate you in cash or replacement bag of the same.

DL can be quite accommodating on the margins, but this one is a very clear exclusion. Amex won't cover if the item is excluded under DL's own rules.

Thanks everyone. I will post back what Delta says.

I will put in a claim with Amex, the worst they will say is you used miles so we are not going to cover it.

The laptop is actually a work laptop so I checked with our IT department/help desk and they didn't think it was a big deal. They said its a bigger deal if I had lost it (I work for a hospital).

Don't claim anything for the laptop to DL given its work. They may offer you a small CS gesture but then how will you transfer this to your employer?

Apply for a new bag at retail price. Mention the check in agent didn't use a grey bin to place the bag in, if they didn't, as that will be important info for the processor to have.

Not sure the issue with miles. Those would be issued as a CS gesture, not as compensation for the laptop. No need to worry about transferring as the miles wouldn't be the hospitals to claim.

If your employer owns the laptop, don't get involved, either with DL or your travel insurance. Operating businesses make risk management judgments to either insure losses such as this or to eat the loss. The bag is easy and DL will likely simply replace it or send you a check, typically at your option.

For what it is worth, at many stations, DL has a reasonable supply of bags. While it likely won't have exactly what you had, it will have something similar and if it is to your liking, you walk away with a new bag.

Some day that laptop is gonna come up missing. Hope you are ready for the fallout from that.

(sorry about the bag)

I think they are suggesting that sooner, rather than later, someone behind the wall at an airport is going to decide that they need that laptop more than the OP does, and that they won't have any recourse when it happens.

Kind of like what happened to a really nice bottle of Irish whiskey in one of my bags at JFK a few years ago.

Try a claim with AMEX, they are pretty customer oriented and I've had good luck with things.

I am more concerned that OP checked a work laptop and the OP works at a hospital.....

Yep, been doing that for many years now and will continue to that as long as my schedule permits me to wait for a checked bag on the other end. If this makes u more concerned, good for you! :D

The data on those laptops is highly private. In fact I bet if employers knew you were doing so on regular basis they'd be upset. This is how data gets stolen. Federal law places significant rules/restrictions on healthcare providers to protect patient info. Knowingly giving up control of a laptop with such info is reckless.
