I've tried a few suggestions, but otherwise my UG % is pretty high in advance - 85%+ - that it wouldn't make sense to clear that often but have the few outliers be the case where the system misreads something, but not in all the other cases? I'm just saying their problems speak more to randomness or bugs than deliberate, otherwise there would be more consistency to the problems customers see on this matter.

Issues like this have been reported on FT long before the online upgrade request system was put in place.

Is DL still running everything on a 1960's style mainframe? I know they have built new platforms on top of it, but is Deltamatic still the backbone of their operation? And could this be why there are basic data errors? This is far beyond my knowledge, I know nothing about systems like this in the travel space or anywhere else.

I definitely agree that it's buggyness and not a purposeful ploy. DL IT is inept and keeps tweaking things that have no need to be tweaked. There never seems to be any thorough testing to weed out bugs. Its just change things, but don't tweak the bugs in their current code.

The "upgrade turned off" inadvertently scenario makes more sense, but thought I'd throw this one out there too.
While not DL, back when I was earning status on AA, I was upgraded at the Platinum window (used 3, 500 mile stickers), however my Executive Platinum colleague was not upgraded. We both booked at the same time and he requested the upgrade just after booking. The GA had no idea, but the AAngel in the Admirals Club didn't dispute this could happen when we asked. Of course that isn't official confirmation AA does this, but the agent left that door wide open. Perhaps DL does this from time to time as well?

I'm surprised nobody has suggested the possibility of SHENA yet

FWIW my money is still on FCM, maybe he's just too sheepish to admit it.

What was the routing? Upgrades into/out of SFO can be dang near impossible, even for a DM on a M fare. I have missed with an RUC on several occasions, especially to ATL/DTW/JFK.

This too, some of the offers are quite good. I accepted AUS-DTW for $111 a couple of weeks ago and TPA-SLC for $179 next week.

I should clarify that my experience on AA as PLT with possibly being upgraded ahead of an EXP due to not having one in a long time was on legacy AA (2010ish), not the current "HP dba US dba AA".

I was told that MM status matters to Delta agents when dealing with the customers. They might not give you any published benefits, but you get more flexibility. In 2015, I was looking at escorting my in-laws back to Manila. They allowed me to use $300 of residual value from my in-law's ticket towards my LAX-NRT-MNL ticket so I only paid $550 for the ticket.

Yes, DL, AA, and UA are still built upon 1960's mainframe technologiy. Upgrade prioirty issues aside, they are extremely reliable platforms.

There’s clearly something wrong with their system. I’ve been upgraded on all legs of my flights recently.

Obviously no proof, but I believe this is the case. Maybe I am a conspiracy theorist here but I think that there is a much more technical algorithm for complimentary upgrades that Delta simply cannot publish without lots of backlash. If delta always went by the book, Platinums would very very rarely get any upgrades, and lose faith in the system. Also if Diamonds always got upgraded they will have no incentive to ever buy first class. Delta has much incentive to go outside the published system once in a while when Platinums upgrade success on certain routes falls below a certain percent to keep them happy. I also believe that Diamonds traveling with a companion DRASTICALLY reduce their upgrade chances.
