737-900ER -- the most common single type in the mainline DL fleet
Delta had retired a bunch of 757-200s simultaneously with the fleet refurb. Delta does not count the charter-config (75C) as part of the active fleet, unlike planespotters.net. That leaves 100 active 757-200s: 75S lie-flat, and domestic First 75D, 75H, and ex-Shanghai Airlines 75G.
Delta has been retiring MD-88s with the stated goal of having them all out of the fleet in 2020. From a long-time base of 116 there are now 101 active MD-88s.
Delta took delivery of its 102nd 739 today and has 28 more on order to be delivered before the end of 2019.

319/320/321 and 717/MD-88/MD-90 are multiple types on the same FAA type certificate data sheets.

Sad
i applaud the OP for his research project even though it makes me sad. I like the MD-xx and the EMB-90’s used on regionals. At least Delta has not bought the 737-900 MAX, like United, which I hears is even worse.

You'd never know it if you lived on the east coast. ATL is mostly all MD and Airbus. Very few 737's. 😒
And why is DCA all Airbus now except for the LAX and SLC flight? Did DL do that as a middle finger to Trump for supporting Boeing?

Probably because the A321 is better at taking off on those short runways than the 739. That would be my guess. The 737-900 is a pile of garbage on wings.

The 739 can make it out of DCA just fine. Older jet and piston aircraft were far worse performers and operated out of DCA. And everything is garbage compared to the 757 if takeoff performance is what you are judging the aircraft on.

I know, right? SO underpowered! Can you believe that I have died in a massive fireball at the end of the runway EVERY SINGLE TIME I have flown on one? That's 73 times just in the last 3 years! I'll be on 4 more in the next 2 weeks, but only because my wife is making a killing on my life insurance....
