What does a future flight status of 'Early' mean?
I was looking at the Flight Status of ATL-DCA flights just now, at 2pm Atlanta time, and the 3pm flight is showing a status of 'Early'. I clicked on the flight number for details and it's showing an estimated departure time of 2:45pm.
How does that work? Normally you have until 10 minutes prior to departure time to be on board, which would be 2:50pm. Are they going to close the doors at 2:45pm? Or 10 minutes before that, at 2:35pm? It seems like people could miss the flight that way. I understand estimating an earlier arrival time, but an earlier departure time seems very strange.https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4c4594e2ee.png |
Generally it's ATC driven. They either leave then or risk not getting airborne for awhile or even cancelled. Also seen these come and go.
|
Sometimes this is due to incoming weather, clogged traffic patterns, changes in patterns, etc... Basically ATC determining that. It could be that you hit that window or you're stuck...could mean a long delay if you miss that tight window to get airborne. Usually there are many announcements at the gate and the agents and FA are all running around to be prepared so even if you do get there at the last second they're basically pushing back while you're still buckling in. In other words, no grace period...
|
Hrm, I'm guessing that ATC has already predicted that airspace will close before a 3pm flight could get off, then? Since it's the summer in Atlanta, it's obviously going to storm this afternoon.
And does that then really mean that people who saunter down at 2:45pm are SOL for catching their flight? I never realized there was the possibility I could miss my flight because it left early! |
My guess is that they are trying to leave early to find a hole through the weather going from ATL-DCA. The weather up here has been screwy and lots of departure/arrival fixes have been opening and closing all day. Perhaps they want to make sure they get the flight out rather than miss their weather window and risk a massive delay or cancellation?
In other cases, I've seen "early" ascribed to flights who's actual flight plans versus planned indicate a shorter flight enroute. |
Just looked and the status just changed to boarding (it updates as soon as the first BP is scanned). I highly doubt that they will fully board the 192 seat A321 in just 18 mins and close the door at 2:35. The door will probably be closed around 2:45pm. |
2238 has just been pushed. 7-8 minutes early from schedule.
|
And just like that, 2238 has taken off. Had to be a beat-the-clock situation to avoid weather.
|
Hrm. And yet, they're saying the 4:16pm (the one I'm interested in) is still on time. Who knows!
Atlanta in the summer is just awful for flights. |

Atlanta in the summer is just awful for flights. But lets not let a few facts get in the way. |

Um, yeaaaaah, ATL isn't on delays... The DC Metros are on significant GDPs along with enroute GSPs for aircraft entering ZDC due to weather. And FWIW: ATL handles far more flights than any of those airports.

Almost every mainline flight out of JFK has a status of "early" about 45 minutes before departure. I once asked a GA to who told it was so that they can close the door early without waiting for missing pax. Great for #teamboardlast .
