KLM 747 vs DL A350

OK coming back from JNB in March via AMS. I have 2 options

1) KLM 747 UD into JFK - never flown the UD and total points is 230,000

2) DL A350 Suite into DTW - never flown the A350/suite total points is 302,000
- This allows us a 3 night stopover in AMS for sightseeing

Hmmm. I'd walk. Those are some lofty mileage prices!

KL UD is no big deal. But less miles......

UD is 2X2

It is quiet but beyond that I prefer an a/c with all aisle access

They fly UD to ORD as well, you might want to check that and see if it is less miles.

Really? From what I've seen, those are STEALS!

IMHO, the A350 is a superior plane with a superior product in D1, but the 747 nostalgia might make me opt for it over the 350 -- at roughly the same cost. For the 35% increase, I'd probably go with the 747. The difference-maker would ultimately be transit time. If the A350 is non-stop but the 747 requires a multiple hops (likely), and the travel time is 4+ hours more, I'd jump ship and go with the shorter flight.

The less time in a tube and the human petri dishes they call "Lounges / Sky Clubs" the better. Worth the extra miles... to me.

I can't speak to US-Africa redemption values, but I booked SEA-CDG-HAM on AF, in 1-2-1 seating with direct aisle access, for 75k.

You are assuming AF will actually fly the route that day. How much is it worth to actually get to your destination on the day scheduled?

I can. I book multiple US-JNB or v.v. a year. OW is 95k or 110k depending on departure city & if on DL for TATL to Europe. I have one on the 28th even.

This is what I see on a consistent basis as well.

One thing I'd check is whether the A350 has personal air vents. Some of them don't, and at least for me, that's a recipe for misery.

Air vents are more an airline choice. US airlines and those operating in really hot locations tend to have them.

The A350 is on DL. There will be air vents. It would be the only aircraft not to have them for DL otherwise. I know every A350 I've been on except one airline has them

Well, the 747 won't be around much longer. If you want to experience the upper deck then I think that should make things simple.

The middle section of D1 on the Delta A350 has NO air vents. Window seats do have them.
