DL 837 ATL-HNL diverted to LAX 15 April 2018

We just landed at LAX due to malfunctioning lavs on the left side of the plane. They are hoping for quick fix but won’t crew timeouts become a problem pretty quickly?

This is the unfortunate but predictable result of the recent 333 to 764 downgrade on this route - increased mechanical problems on these old planes.

The 764s aren't that much older than the A330s. Other than the 232 ton A330s that were delivered between 2015-17, the A330s were delivered between 2003-04 and the 764s between 2001-02. While I like the A330 a lot more than I do the 764, I've never experienced too many issues mx wise on the 764s.

This flight on N831MH delivered Sept 2000 (happened to take a photo this morning of the plane parked at F12 from the Skyclub).

Random data point - N818NW was parked on E this morning, it was delivered August 2007.

Back a few years ago when it was still DLxxx "operated by NW", there were three or four days in a row that an A330 from ATL-HNL was diverted or canceled due to insistent problems. Same aircraft kept having problems.

Can happen to any aircraft. Was most common with 747s, but now those are sadly no more.

Is there any reason to think the age of the airframe is at all related to the reliability of the lavs? When these birds get interior mods don't they get new lavs too?

I was following N831MH - was wondering what the issue was for it to divert. The 764 needs a refurb desperately...

Update - N831MH has been towed to the hanger. Continuation of DL 837 in limbo for now. Many folks bailing to other flights either to HNL or directly to their neighbor island destination. The good folks at T3 Skyclub got me confirmed onto DL 1559 so hoping to be out of here shortly.

Have the DL 764s gone through refurbs other than the lie-flats? Y cabin looks pretty vintage.

I don't think they're scheduled for refurbs for at least another couple of years, unfortunately. Those poor people escaping for a relaxing vacation! At least you'll be on a 752! :-D

I think the last refurb of the 764 was around 2009 (It was the first plane to get lie flats) and got all new seats throughout. They are scheduled to get modded again next year which can’t come soon enough. (those birds are tired on the inside)

That just shows the incomplete understanding shared by you and chrisj85: every 764 is younger than all of Delta's lie-flat 757s, which were all delivered to TWA before AA bought the assets out of bankruptcy.

Most of the 757s may be older than the 764s but have all been refurbished within the past couple of years unlike the 764s. All of the refurbished 752s are in great shape on the inside.

I mentioned nothing about age - I'm quite aware of the history of some of the 757s that were ex-TWA birds. I enjoy the 752s and think they are great planes - simple as that. Your post is irrelevant.

I made no statements about the age of any 752s. It is not in dispute that N831MH is almost 18 years old.

It is also not in dispute (though you raise it as an issue) that the age of any airframe is not an indication or cause of any problems. It is an ill informed implication that the 764 is less reliable than the a330. I am sure that the dispatch rates within Delta are nearly identical between the two fleets. Sorry you got diverted. Things happen.

Ironically, this 752 (N535US) is over 22 years old - delivered to NW in Nov 1995. However, it obviously has gotten a complete refurb.

And we we could only wish for the 752 lie-flats to HNL Regular domestic F on this ship.
