Aeromexico and Delta to offer new Detroit-Leon route

Delta Air Lines and its partner Aeromexico, Mexico's global airline, will launch new nonstop service between Detroit and Leon, Mexico, beginning April 30.

The state of Guanajuato, where Leon is situated, is known for its significant industrial activity, with strong automotive, leather and footwear, agroindustry, tourism, and pharmaceutical sectors, among others. Detroit, the Motor City, is the center of the U.S. automobile industry and home of leading auto companies.

Interesting, anyone know what type of aircraft? And how it will be split between DL/AM?

My employer recently opened a plant near there (Celaya), and I assume I’ll be going there at some point. (Actually it’s closer to QRO, but if BJX gets a nonstop from here, that definitely changes the calculus in its favor.)

Looking on a date in July I see an Embraer 190 operated by an Aeromexico regional carrier.

The reason I heard locally is to provide service for General Motors passengers. GM has a factory in the Leon area.

Another legendary Michigan business name, Gerber, has had a packing plant in Queretaro for many years. Queretaro is near Celaya and Leon.

I wish it flew to Queretaro, not Leon. That would be amazing

Delta tried ATL-QRO maybe ten years ago. It lasted very briefly. Maybe with the growth of industry around QRO and the AM JV such a flight could work today.

AeroMexico Connect flies this route daily now. It’s listed on Delta’s schedule as an E170/190.

I have to think more people on this route fly from Detroit. I wish it would be DTW -> QRO, and route connecting flights from other cities through Detroit, not Atlanta.

For a large swath of the south, this would not be practical, where ATL is.
