Why must the aisle arm rest be in the down position for takeoff?

Any thoughts?

I believe movable armrests are provided as an accessibility to those with disabilities. My guess is that they are designed to perform in the "down" position and reduce the risk of you being pulled/slid into the aisle in the event of an aircraft incident.

Same reason that the doors should be shut on your car while driving. One more level of protection to keep you from being thrown about.
.
Also....in the up position they tend to act like blunt spears.
