I can't stand 737-900 on transcon flights. I really hope they can make a wide body work.

In fairness Boeing has already said their next-gen 737 will be more humane (similar to A320 proportions) so that solves some of the problem. Presumably if they go with a narrowbody for the 797 then they will also use the wider cabin. While still not as ideal as a widebody, that covers some of the bigger comfort differentials.

The 787-8 is FAR too much aircraft for the MoM mission. The range and cargo capacity are unneeded and add considerable cost.

Yes the 797 needs to be in the 210-220 seat area and around 5,000-6,000 nm in range. The basically need a modern day 767.

If they basically need a modern 767 then I don't see why they wouldn't just re-engine the 767, do some aero and avionics improvements, and call it a day. They're still building those things you know, so it isn't even like they've lost the tooling / manufacturing capability (like the 757). Sure, it may not be the latest and greatest sexy composite frame but the capitalized costs of a new airframe design is likely more than the fuel savings you would get for what would ultimately be a lower volume aircraft.

In my opinion, if a re-engined 767 doesn't have a good economic value proposition, than that tells me that a MoM widebody will never have a good value proposition. Even if they could get fuel efficiency up by another 10-15% per seat versus a re-engined 767, I don't see how that would make up for the increased cost of composites production and at least $15-25B of capitalized development costs that would be embedded in a cleansheet airframe.

They've even already put updated avionics on the 767 airframe via the KC-46, which has a 787 style glass flight deck & displays. Standard 767 engines though (PW4062s, with no thrust reversers to boot)

new civilian 767s (eg 763F going to FedEx et al) get the same LDS avionics.

I think part of the concern is getting leapfrogged by Airbus if they don't start from scratch. That's already happening in the single-aisle market--the MAX 8 is selling well enough, but the MAX 9 is getting clobbered by the A321neo. And the 767 is on the upper end of MoM passenger capacity; at the lower end, they don't have a competitor against the A321LR.

I'm just not sure that Boeing can build one aircraft that covers both 757/321 and the 767. I think they need the 767 replaced first. United really wants it. One thing that puzzles me is that Boeing couldn't extend the landing gear on the 737Max-9 but they are able to do it on the 737-Max10. The -9 really needs taller landing gear. I'm wondering if they are expecting the -10 to replace the -9 after it enters production. With the 737Max-10's taller gear the runway performance should be much better and a way to fight off the 321 until Boeing can design a clean sheet 737 replacement.

Bastian tells Boeing not to overbuild the 797.

Delta CEO says don?t overbuild ?797?; skeptical on hypersonic airliner | Aircraft & Engines content from ATWOnline

Shut up Ed. You know you're not going to buy it. You'll buy the A321superneoxxlr.

Just like the 787-10 Delta said they wanted so badly but still haven't ordered. 🙄

What makes you personally think DL isn’t going to buy the 797 and instead will order more A321s? Airbus dosen’t even have an airplane to the equivalent of the proposed 797.

Airbus isn't in a position to build a new jet to compete with the 797 so some people are thinking they will try and stretch the A321 to accommodate ~250 seats. If they do that then I believe DL will order that and a few more A330neo to replace the 757/767 fleet. Operating economics won't matter too much if Delta gets them for a song and dance.
