In fairness Boeing has already said their next-gen 737 will be more humane (similar to A320 proportions) so that solves some of the problem. Presumably if they go with a narrowbody for the 797 then they will also use the wider cabin. While still not as ideal as a widebody, that covers some of the bigger comfort differentials.

If they basically need a modern 767 then I don't see why they wouldn't just re-engine the 767, do some aero and avionics improvements, and call it a day. They're still building those things you know, so it isn't even like they've lost the tooling / manufacturing capability (like the 757). Sure, it may not be the latest and greatest sexy composite frame but the capitalized costs of a new airframe design is likely more than the fuel savings you would get for what would ultimately be a lower volume aircraft.
In my opinion, if a re-engined 767 doesn't have a good economic value proposition, than that tells me that a MoM widebody will never have a good value proposition. Even if they could get fuel efficiency up by another 10-15% per seat versus a re-engined 767, I don't see how that would make up for the increased cost of composites production and at least $15-25B of capitalized development costs that would be embedded in a cleansheet airframe.

I think part of the concern is getting leapfrogged by Airbus if they don't start from scratch. That's already happening in the single-aisle market--the MAX 8 is selling well enough, but the MAX 9 is getting clobbered by the A321neo. And the 767 is on the upper end of MoM passenger capacity; at the lower end, they don't have a competitor against the A321LR.

Bastian tells Boeing not to overbuild the 797.
Delta CEO says don?t overbuild ?797?; skeptical on hypersonic airliner | Aircraft & Engines content from ATWOnline
Shut up Ed. You know you're not going to buy it. You'll buy the A321superneoxxlr.
Just like the 787-10 Delta said they wanted so badly but still haven't ordered. 🙄

Airbus isn't in a position to build a new jet to compete with the 797 so some people are thinking they will try and stretch the A321 to accommodate ~250 seats. If they do that then I believe DL will order that and a few more A330neo to replace the 757/767 fleet. Operating economics won't matter too much if Delta gets them for a song and dance.
