so yesterday I had a MDW-ATL-XXX segment, the inbound was delayed and I called for an IRROPS rebooking to MDW-DTW-XXX. Destination here isn't important because this isn't really a datapoint about ugprades (given the ATL irrops mess yesterday), it's more of a question of how things are processed.

I was booked into the last Y seat on DTW-XXX, with one open F. Checked in at T-5 hours or so, I was #1 of 9 on the upgrade list. On my way to midway a couple of hours later, I look and I'm in 2A, but the upgrade list doesn't show me as upgraded.

I'm assuming this was effectively an op-up? an agent needed to rebook some other traveler onto that flight, and since there was no open Y seating they just bumped me up before it even went to the gate? Why wouldn't they just confirm him and create an overbooked Y and let the gate sort it out?

FWIW the flight went out full but nobody got bumped.

I found a route and time where I was the only flyer to get upgraded, and the plane is largely empty: DCA-MSP-YXE, leaving on the Fourth of July in the 5 pm hour. Still 11 empties in F on the A321 to MSP; and 6 empties in F on the CRJ700 to Diefenbaker Airport. Sadly, I only go to Canada for pleasure, as I don't have any business dealings up there.

MSP-PHX (Fri redeye) as FO. 1 for 6. Cleared into F at the gate along with 3 NRSA. This was an award ticket no less, so paid $5 for the trip. FCM was $330

So far this year as PM, 75% to FC and 25% TO C+ (16 eligible segments).
More surprisingly, 80% to FC to or via ATL. The trick must be to avoid the businessperson's rush.

I don't keep track fully but as an ATL based DM flying almost 40 segments I have been C+ at booking and only not beeing upgraded 3 times to FC. The last 3 round trips every single leg/segment has been at 3/5 days.

IAD-ATL delayed resulting in an illegal connection. Switched to DCA-ATL and cleared a few minutes after, despite having a long upgrade list.

Went 2 for 4 on my most recent soiree, got upgraded on DCA-DTW 7/9 and ORD-DTW 7/14, F class sold out a week in advance on DTW-ORD 7/9 and DTW-DCA 7/14 (I was #13 out of 63 as a DM on an X fare DTW-ORD).

7/15, ATL-LGA: FC, battleground, pulled up front after boarding. Had to SDC because of bad weather, and started out 7/18 for six seats so I didn’t think it was going to happen!

Flying to DEN on Wednesday morning and still haven't cleared. Six seats available in FC.
