Interesting observation, but not sure it is uniform. I've flown the 10 pm or so KL JFK-AMS twice in the last year (747 both times) and on both flights, the meals service was very quick. In fact, it was an abbreviated menu -- appetizer, main course, dessert.

Interesting. We just ate in the car on road trips as a kid. Packed lunches.

I agree that on the ground, I have no desire for a meal at 1:00am local time. But my rule of thumb while traveling is to eat when food is offered, if at all possible. This is because sometimes your next planned meal doesn’t occur as planned, delays happen, cancellations happen, diversions happen, misconnects and inadvertent overnights happen, etc. I prefer to not have to look for food in the midst of those issues, too, if I can prevent it. That’s just me and my two cents. Not saying those are reasons enough for an entire plane full of people to eat at 1:00am local/body clock time.

My father and maternal grandfather were both in the Army (different countries), and my father says that they apparently both got the same advice early on: never pass up a chance to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom - you never know when the next chance will come.

I've done many TATL in Delta, KLM, Air France, and SAS (OK, not necessarily many with each of them, but certainly many in total), and I'm always happy when I have Delta for the eastbound portion. The European airlines are definitely much slower in dinner service. There's a whole thread on the SAS forum joking about it, in fact. The ~7 hours from Newark to Stockholm usually leaves about 2.5 hours for sleeping. Of course, I just put in good earplugs and slap on the eye mask if I really want to sleep, but I still like the Delta reasonably efficient dinner service. Enjoy a meal and movie, sleep for a few hours, and get ready to start the day.
