Checking Bags Thru 2 PNR

I have 2 separate flights coming up the same day on Delta
APN - DTW 1:44pm - 2:44pm Bought a few weeks ago
DTW - DFW 8:06 - 10:34 Bought today

Will I be able to check the bag thru to DFW and just pay one fee or will I have to claim and recheck?

In spite of the good news from TTT be prepared for some pushback since you have more than 4 hours on a domestic itin at DTW.

Or maybe they will put on an earlier flight

You will absolutely be able to check the bags through. I was successful having the JFK agent tag a bag on an interline partner on separate tickets (DL-BA).

International itins allow more than 4 hours for transit.

Probably not. It's not even allowed to separate bags from you on purpose just to make a 4 hour domestic connection work to get you a bag fee waiver you aren't entitled to.

A nice agent may do it. But more likely than not it won't allow it. If so be prepared to pay the bag fee each time, as you agreed to when you purchased each separate ticket.

You can SDC on the domestic leg connecting from an international itinerary. I don't know the practice at DTW, but presumably even if the bag is checked through to DFW, you will need to reclaim it at customs, and then place it on the "onward connections" belt after customs so that it can be screened and loaded for DFW. At this point (before you recheck your bag), you should inquire at the DL desk about the possibility of SDC. If you do not have sufficient status, you will have to pay a fee, but you can inquire.

Good point - I missed the connection time. OP, unless you SDC before the flight I bet you will get some resistance when trying to do this.

I misread APN as ARN. (And admit I was surprised by the ARN-DTW route!)

I was guessing Appleton, Wisconsin (close to Green Bay), but it's a small airport in Michigan.

DL is probably staffed by airport contract employees there.

Not sure if it was contract employee who checked me in, the other employees were sure contract employees

There was no problem at all checking my bags thru, she just asked for my flight # that I was taking DTW to DFW and was all set, got contined updates on the Delta app as well, great service
