Former employee hacked system, swiped 2M Delta miles

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/...ine-miles.html

Police say the 2,000,000 miles are worth $300,000!

In what world?

I hope she has a good lawyer!

The article refers to points not miles and refers to a "pool" account which suggests to me it was a SkyBonus account. This makes the 300K value even more puzzling as it takes 85K points for a coach ticket. I put the value more like $7K.

This sounds like a reporter who never mastered basic arithmetic as far as decimal points.

The most extreme possible valuations of SM can get close to $0.15. TATL D1 booked as an ex-US one-way can run $9,000-$11,000 instead of 70,000 SM, giving $0.13-0.16. An absurd price and unrealistic valuation, but still it shows how such a number could be created.

A misleading headline don't you think?
Apparently an employee of a company called "Brookstone" in the UK.....not Delta.

Is that a chain of bookstores?

IIRC there is/was something like Brookstore in the USA that sells/sold expensive and often high tech gadgets. I can't recall when I last noticed one in a mall.

2,000,000 miles really don't get much from Delta these days. Should have stolen more.

They're not even SkyMiles. Just SkyBonus points. The latter is far less valuable than the former - this is not a joke.

No, it is the mall-based specialty electronics retailer Brookstone that is based in NH. The woman is in the US State of NH, too.

This story is just too funny.....

I have no idea if this is true but it reminds me of the the thief who supposedly stole fake money from YMCA toy cash register ....

I was wondering about Manchester UK versus NH since the amounts were stated in dollars.

Ah, petty larceny then. If the offender lived in California, probably wouldn't even go to jail under the catch and release program.

I wonder how often that happens with skybonus accounts... When I found my employer's skybonus account, it hadn't been touched in years -- our last contact was probably with the old northwest biz perks program. the previous administrator (working out of a different office) retired a few years earlier, and while earnings had been coming into the account, no redemptions had gone out.. nothing would have stopped her from logging in and continuing to renew her sky club membership. i kinda wish she had -- would have been a better use of the points that expired!
