Delta 777-200ER/LR Conversions to 7HD & 7HB. Pre-mods config is 37J/36W/218Y. For all the ERs and the first LR, post-mods config was initially 28J/48W/220Y (7HD/7HB). The post-mods config for all ERs and LRs is now 28J/48W/90Y+/122Y (7CD/7CB).

Modifications are taking place at SIN and the entry and exit dates are based on SIN time (GMT + 8 hrs). Comfort + installation was done at ATL on all the 7HD>7CD conversions, and on 7106 (7HB>7CB). The remaining 9 LRs had the C + cabins installed at SIN.

Delta One Suites.

It's a refurbished 777

And that will be 7006, N865DA, due to exit mods next week.

I'm not saying it's not. If someone from the inside says they have to move, I totally believe it. But my understanding was they knew from the very beginning that the layout without C+ would only be temporary, and made accommodations to make adjusting the main cabin and adding C+ very simple.
I haven't been on an updated 777, but the A350s definitely don't have several mysterious rows with extra legroom for no obvious reason. I assume they will lose 1 row of seating when C+ gets added.

I agree tho, it's very strange that they are making this change on such a new config. I have trouble understanding the reasoning

Market feedback? Enough people will to pay a premium for Comfort+ but not make the bigger stretch to Premium Select?

So out of 8 ERs, there will be 3 configurations flying around at the same time. Let's hope they never need to swap planes.

It's a good question. I feel like so much of Delta's C+ was filled with elites to begin with that they couldn't have made that much revenue from it. Then again, the cost for a few rows of C+ is pretty trivial so maybe it was enough.

I would optimistically say that Delta realized that Elites that were traveling in Y were booking away - but that's a stretch and there's not a good way to measure leakage. There are a couple of routes where Delta flies both C+ and non-C+ planes and perhaps they could observe that elites avoided these new planes like the plague. I know I personally took a less convenient time/routing to get C+ on one trip, and I booked away from Delta on another because of the lack of C+ (took United instead where I get E+ for free as a Gold).

I don't think this is a very good explanation though as I feel like Delta would just shrug and say "meh" to it. I can't imagine that it is changing behavior too much (I'm 6' 4" so C+ is just a necessity - I spend enough 5 hours flights in regular Y domestically and I couldn't do it much longer than that). But Delta is demonstrably losing business from me at least, and I used to pay a premium for Delta flights (because living in Atlanta it is usually a better routing). But I'll happily skip the $1700 nonstop without C+ and hop over to a United flight for $1200 with a quick connection if the flight time is 8+ hours. For a 15 hour TPAC, it's a no brainer.

Perhaps the objective is that I will finally succumb and pay for Premium Select. Maybe they're right, but since I still can't sleep in Premium Select, the value prop is limited. A 60%+ premium for marginal extra comfort (over C+) is not a good value prop to me. A 60%+ premium for significant extra comfort (over Y) is, but when there are other options at significantly lower costs all it is doing is pushing me to other airlines.

Remember that only DM and PM get advanced upgrades to C+, so I bet a lot of people actually do just buy it on long hauls. As a GM, I would certainly not wait until 72 hours, I'd just buy it. I don't even consider it a real GM benefit, to be honest. The only time I've really taken advantage of is when I am actually booking within 72 hours.

There appears to be a lot of slack in the 777 fleet right now. There are only 12/18 currently flying. 7001, N860DA, has been at ATL since 12th December. 7002, N861DA, has been at ATL since 13th December. 7003, N862DA, has been at SIN since 29th November for mods, and is scheduled to exit in January. 7006, N865DA, has been at SIN since 16th November for mods, and is scheduled to exit next week. 7008, N867DA, has been at ATL since 9th December. 7105, N705DN, has been at AMA since 8th December for painting.

I assume part of this slack (aside from the winter schedule) is because of the A350s.

With two A350s and two A330neos joining the fleet before summer, I am curious if they will just bust out the rest of the 777 fleet during the summer.

Well I'm glad to see C+ coming back on the widebodies with the retrofit.

Ed Bastian told the Wall Street Journal earlier this year that the 777s were in fact flying around with extra legroom in Y, pending ability to sell Comfort+. So the seat count should be able to stay the same, but the spacing will obviously be redistributed. Here's the quote from back this summer:

Mr. Bastian’s particular seat had 1 more inch of legroom than Mr. Parker’s, too. Delta’s 777-200s have some rows temporarily set at 32 inches of seat pitch instead of the airline’s standard 31 inches. That inch will disappear when more extra-legroom coach seating arrives, leaving standard coach all at 31 inches.

ERs should be done before summer. Not sure about the LRs.

He meant that DL might only use the 777s during the summer. They have way more big planes than they need. Many of them sit idle in the winter

Ok, I read it to mean 'if there's slack due to 350s/339s, they'll try to do the remaining 777 mods during the summer vs in the past where they've not been able to do so'.

My bad for the vagueness. Yes, this is what I meant.
