30,000 point Penalties Imposed on Skymiles Tix

Hello,

I know DL recently started imposing a 30,000 point penalty for J-Class tickets to Asia booked within 21 days. A sick penalty compared to the 0-$75 other airlines charge. I remember when this first launched you could spare yourself this sad penalty by booking within 3 days, that now seems to be gone. Was it a glitch then , or now? Its a sad day when you cant go to Asia one way for under 100,000 hard earned miles!

I see 80K seats within 3 weeks...just within a few minutes of searching:

NYC-PVG on 11/19 and 11/21 via DTW
DTW-TYO on 11/13, 11/15, 11/19, 11/20, 11/21, 11/22, 11/23, 11/24, 11/25
ATL-ICN on 11/15, 11/17, 11/19, 11/20, 11/21, 11/22

I'm sure there are more, but those were the first three city pairs I checked.

Whatever you are seeing isn't universal. A quick search found 80k in J LAX-PVG for the 24th.

At one point, the standard CSM800 80K J awards had a 21-day advance purchase requirement and you could only get 110K or higher awards in most markets less than 21-days out due to that fare rule. However, there was a subset of markets where there were also 80K awards that required purchase less than 3 days out. They appear to have done away with all of these and most markets do not have any advance purchase requirement on the CSM800 80K J awards. There's an exception for PEK and PVG in that all awards (not just the CSM800's) now have a 3-day advance purchase requirement. Other markets outside of these (HKG, NRT, ICN, etc.), do not have the 3-day advance requirement in the fare rules.

Awards in partners to Asia have a 30,000 point penalty or premium for booking within 21 days. 125,000 instead of 95000 in Business. Write is worse. G class in VA is 135000 miles which is a 65000 point premium Over United or American crazy.

Wrong. A SEA-HKG itinerary for 11/24 is available for 80k on China Eastern.

How is that possible when China Eastern doesn't have passenger flights to SEA?

No. The 80k option is DL SEA-PVG. The TPAC/TATL flight is what matters for the 15k penalty. Doesn't matter if it's shorter then next flight or same length. Ie LAX-JFK-AMS-JNB will cost 15k more if the TATL isn't on DL.

Sorry, didn't look at the routing just saw the MU flights I assumed it was via LAX but as pointed out, the SEA-PVG segment is on Delta.

I was thinking about waiting for 72 hours prior to departure because originally the price went down at 72 hours back to 95000 but now thats over! Now its just always 125K within 21 days, making partner redemptions ridiculously expensive.

Always is such a strong word.

LAX-PVG on 11/24 flying China Southern for 95k. Flight is via CAN. 80k options are available via SEA on DL as well.
