Should be doable, depending on traffic the mall is about an hour from DTW.
Figure 30 minutes to get to rental car, 60 minutes to outlet, 60 minutes return, 30 minutes to return car, probably 2 hours on the ground allowing for a 60 minutes arrival prior to flight.

I strongly suggest a trip to the Henry J Ford.
Really an interesting museum, particularly if you are interested in old technology. And its only 15 min from the terminal.
basically anything you can find at the outlet mall you can now get cheaper on the web.

Are you coming off an international flight where you'll have to clear US Immigration/Customs or a domestic flight? What day of the week? What time of year? (In the next few days or in January when winter weather will cause slower traffic even without accidents?)
Is there something particular at this outlet you really want to get to? Google Maps currently puts it at 1 hour each way (and this at 11:30 pm Eastern time). By the time you get a rental car and factor i returning it and re-clearing security will you have enough time there to make it worth your while going all the way up to Auburn Hills?

I will be coming of a domestic flight, and it will be in november. I have gold card status so hopefully that will enable me to clear the lines a lot quicker through the fast lanes. It will be a monday morning around 10am, so hopefully there won't be a lot of traffic around.

I agree with the other poster about Henry Ford. Or do greenfield village if Henry Ford isn't your thing, if you flight is in later November it is pretty cool when it's decorated for Christmas.
You'll also be limited as to how much you can buy since you will have to limit to what you can carry on since you won't be able to check a bag at DTW since you have a connection there.
If you like Casinos you could do an Uber to Greektown Casino and there are a few good places to eat at in that area.
It isn't worth wasting the money on a rental car or Uber to go to the outlet mall IMO.

Another Possibility -- Westin Hotel Pool & Exercise Facility
I had a long layover at DTW a number of years ago to take advantage of a cheap mileage redemption enabling me to fly in the upper deck of a 747 operated by PMNW.
I spent a couple of hours at the Westin Hotel pool and exercise facility which is connected to DTW but just outside security. I think the Westin charged $15.00 for a day pass. I enjoyed myself, then went back through security, finished up the layover at the club formerly known as the World Club in the middle of the main DTW building, and then got on the flight for AMS.

I would say best case is you'll get 2 to 2.5 hours at the outlet mall. At least 90 minutes to 2 hours get off the plane and get the car and get there. 2 to 2.5 hours to get back, drop off car, and clear security. And that's best case (not factoring in traffic delays due to construction on the highways or weekday traffic or accidents).
There are other shopping centers closer to DTW than the outlet mall in Auburn Hill. What's the appeal for the outlet an hour away from DTW?

Gold flying blue, but i take your point. Its a lot of travelling for just a outlet, and if there is any accidents then i won't make the return flight. I think i will go to the Westin Hotel and use the gym and the pool facilities. Then spend a few hours relaxing in the Delta lounge. Thanks for your suggestions and help.

Other posters have better ideas though... Westin, Ann Arbor, Henry Ford Museum, etc.
