If planespotters.net is correct, they've parked 26 - and none of those has returned to service.
The MD-90 fleet is now down to 37 and shrinking, just 12 more to park by the end of the year. Yes, we will see how many (more than a few say if any) currently parked birds return to the skies early next year. While no MD-90s are being scrapped at this time, some (like many or all the Chinese examples) will very likely never fly again once parked.

Is there even a small prospect of a few Delta MD-88s escaping the bone yard? I understand a few of American's newer MD-80s (ex-TWA MD-83s IIRC) have moved on to fly with new operators. With the large mass of MD-80s from Allegiant, American and Delta now being parted out, that could relieve the MD-80 parts shortage for at least a while. Granted, Delta's Mad Dogs are being retired as they time out on heavy maintenance hours so they would need expensive heavy checks. Also, IIRC, AA newest MD-80s (again, ex-TWA MD-83s) are from about 1999 or 2000 while DL's last MD-88s entered service around 1993.

I would guess the MD-90's chances of flying again beyond Delta are about the same as a snowball's chance in the middle of the sun.

Delta execs have gone on record - multiple times - that all MD-88s will be gone by the end of 2020. They certainly have enough new aircraft purchase commitments - across the 321 and A220 orders - to allow this to happen, although Bombardier hasn't ramped up A220 deliveries to necessary levels as of yet.

Yes about the late 2020 retirement date. I suppose I could have been more clear.

I meant if any retired DL MD-88s could avoid the scrappers to fly with new owners.
A small number of ex-American MD-80s have moved on to new operators. Delta's MD-88s would still have some life left in them. Seems I recall Delta had originally planned to fly the MD-88 well into the next decade as long as oil prices allowed.

It's largely the increasing scarcity of MD-80 parts (in particular, JT8D-200 engine parts) that is leading to an earlier than expected MD-88 drawdown.

Many of DL's recently retired MD-88s are nominally in storage, not scrapped.

However, if Delta is retiring them because it's hard to find parts it's not going to be any easier for smaller operators.

"We expect to accelerate the retirement of our MD-90 fleet," says Paul Jacobson, chief financial officer of the Atlanta-based carrier, during a quarterly earnings call today. ... Asked for a timeline on the MD-90 retirements, Jacobson says the airline is still "considering" the move and will provide additional details later in the quarter.

...

Jacobson's comments are the first public acknowledgement of plans to remove the MD-90 from Delta's fleet, despite a 25-aircraft drawdown over the past two years. The airline removed one aircraft in 2017, and then another 12 without fanfare in the second quarter of 2018.

Apparently, 971, which was set to retire today, is in for a check so it can cover for 977, which had a collision with a tug and is being written off.

N988DL took an insane bird strike here at VPS, ferried back to ATL. Not sure how quickly it will be back in service.

N997DL when AOG in ICT on Wednesday, had to ferry in another MD88 from ATL to cover the 6am flight. 997 sat in ICT all day Wednesday then did a ferry at 9,000 ft to MEM late Wed night where it still sits.

The MD88 fleet is taking a beating in recent weeks....

Looks like 971 had indeed risen from the grave so-to-speak, at least delaying the inevitable for a while longer.

As N515CR pointed out earlier, 971 was originally scheduled for retirement by now (in general, DL's individual MD-88s are being phased out as they zero out on heavy check hours). However, 971 is now filling in for 977 which hit a tug last month at ATL. Very fortunate that the tug driver escaped with only minor injuries. 977 was declared a WO (IIRC the tug as well) and is now parked without engines, having not flown since completing its SYR-ATL leg on April 4. I suppose it wouldn't be too surprising if 977 is eventually parted out on sight, as preparing it for one last ferry flight might be more trouble than its worth.

971 was seemingly given a heavy check as it did an apparent test flight out of ATL about a week ago. This evening (May 21 2019), 971 made its first revenue flight (ATL-CHS) since completing its unexpected heavy check.
