It looks like a full compliment of flights was also loaded for Sunday for N975DL, before all of it being pulled early this morning (Saturday). My guess is that the tail number was being used as a placeholder.

Much of the timing and possible reentry into service of the MD88’s will be driven by all the issues airbus is currently having building and delivering the A321 NEO’s. They are projecting they will be way behind on their Delta deliveries and attempts to resolve the issues have proved ineffective. Fortunately for Airbus the Max issues have kept it off the news radar.
DL apparently has stopped doing JT8D-200 engine overhauls. Thus there is only so much MD-88 powerplant time left. Much of this time is via the use of so-called "green time" engines (in other words, pay only for as much time as you need). Needless to say, DL will want to pay for only as much engine time (and for that matter pay for only as many heavy checks) as really needed.
Only about 25 or so MD-88s have been upgraded with ADS-B navigation avionics needed for flying beyond Jan 1 2020. All other 88s will apparently need to exit the fleet by the end of the year.
Not to mention Mad Dog pilots that will soon be needed to transfer to other airliner types.

Feel like I'm right back in MD-88/90. For some reason, they Delta decided to pull the 737-800s from ewr-atl route(except for 2 earliest flights of the day) and replace them with 717-200. Has same tired setup and seats that are rock hard. Gald this is my last trip for awhile. Really enjoyed the 737-800.

I have a feeling that’s why they are retiring some of the newer MD-80s. I bet you all of the N97xDLs have them and some of the DEs.
