I will be disappointed to lose the MD88s on OKC-ATL-OKC.

I fear no 739s much less 321 for us as we will likely get stuck with 717s. I have never forgiven DL for their use of RJ200s on this route but do not expect any favors coming our way.

The 717 is basically a newer, shorter MD88.

Currently on one of these in what one person calls “some of the best real estate on the planet”.

The sooner they are gone the better.

Made some updates to the -90 fleet as there are some more birds not flying. I believe there are 4 at ATL which includes: two that have been waiting for the heavy check to start, one for over a week, and one for two days. There is one more that just arrived today with no flights scheduled which I didn't count. There were two more at MSP that I also didn't count because it hasn't been more than 2 days IIRC.

-88s we are down to 111 active now. There are several birds that have 2017 noted on them, those may not be happening given the point left in the year and how many there are.

The B739s are AWFUL, as we all know, for multiple reasons.

It makes me all that much more glad that my flying is winding down.

Yep. I remember flying MD-90s from SJC to SLC and getting upgraded to FC. You could not even hear the engines on takeoff. The only noise was the the nose gear going over the seams in the runway pavement, followed by the sound of the air rushing past. Once the airplane rotated, all you could hear is the air. Very eerie.

The next MD88 to be retired, N930DL, will be flown from ATL>BYH tomorrow for part-out and scrap.

I will be flying a Mad Dog 90 from MSP-TPA in April it was originally changed from an A319 so not sure if they will switch it to a A 319/A320/737 or 717. I agree I love the quiet cabin of the MD 80/90.

I flew once in First Class in an AA MD 80 from LAX-SFO as part of a Hawaii First Class Award Trip I took in 2005. The original LAX-SFO flight was switched from a ERJ to an MD 80 so I called AA to give me my First Class seat and it was great!

Other times I have flown the MD 80 from SJC-LAX many times on Reno Air and American Airlines.

Down to 109 -88s with 930 having departed.

Still a lot of -90s not flying with some waiting engines/heavy checks.

Another MD90, N932DN, is currently en route from ATL>BYH, presumably for part-out and scrap.

Delta has eliminated the 88 from LGA and as of current estimation should have all of the 88s retired by 2020. The MD-90s may follow them out the door as the costs of overhauling the engines are increasing as DL is the only operator of the type.

See the wiki for fleet activity.
The engines in use on the MD-90's are used extensively worldwide on the A320. There are no real overhaul issues on them.

My most recent, quiet and comfortable flight on any MD was earlier this year after one had gone MX for four hours. Apparently there was a literal hole in the side of the plane somewhere which needed patching. Apart from that I don’t think I would consider any MD quiet, though lately engine noise comes in second to overall PA volume. As soon as I board my in-ear, noise-isolating headphones go in.

Are we able to tell the difference between MD90's that are awaiting engines/checks versus the ones being retired?

AFAIK one can only go by the WiKi, and it being updated accurately by those in the know!
