Mystery DL flight # to ATL.

I am flying from SFO>ATL on Wednesday night on DL8772, which is being operated by a B752. I have never seen this flight # before, and am wondering if anyone here has any info about it. Just seems an odd one, as it's not even listed in the Flight Schedules on DL.com.

I think anything starting with 8xxx is usually an extra section. In this case it looks like DL usually only has a 10pm redeye but they added an 11pm redeye probably to get the airplane back to ATL from a charter, maintenance, schedule change, etc. This is really just a one off extra flight that DL is selling as a revenue flight instead of just sending the airplane back to ATL empty.

Totally makes sense! Thanks! I'll be interested to see where it's coming to SFO from!

Is the flight fairly full? It could be a charter that's using many of the seats. Delta then sells the rest.

It is an extra section. Basically it's a repo following a charter into OAK for the Seahawks. Right now, there are passengers booked on the SFO-ATL leg.

And why didn't they just run it OAK-ATL? Oh, wait, that route was announced then cancelled.

Marketing runs Delta Air Lines. My guess is the revenue wasn't there for OAK-ATL or it was always supposed to be just a summer seasonal route. A full 757 from SFO probably makes some coin for them.

This route seems to have a lot of paid F (often lots of F seats filled before upgrade window).

CO used to fly IAH to Houston Ellington Field. Free parking, regular schedule, and fares cheaper than ending/starting at IAH.
