Brakes on MD88

Just landed at ATL on a MD-88 and the brakes are horrific! The whole plane shakes as if it were falling apart and there are huge grinding sounds.

pilot came on apologizing, saying that because it was so hot in ATL today and the MD-88 had steel brakes, this was normal.

they don't fly this equipment a lot on my usual routes...does anyone know if this sounds right?

I have no idea for the reason, but the brakes on those planes shudder all the time. Perfectly normal occurrence. Happened on my flight through ATL on Sunday --- and it was hot, so maybe that is the reason.

I was on an MD-88 about 6 months ago on a paid F ticket from ATL-DCA and the plane shook so bad on landing that there were glasses in the front galley that were shattered and broke. Everyone in the F cabin was looking around and wondering what that noise was but I was in row 1 and could see what had happened.

OT, just curious what this had to do with the broken glass and MD-88 Brakes LOL

I would probably have others wondering how I got an UG on ATL-DCA. There were around ~45 PAX on the UG list for that flight. I'm not trying to be a DYKWIA here!

Fair enough, I have only ever managed to be in First if I paid on that route and a lot of ATL routes

I recall this being a pretty normal occurrence on the MD-88 (and other forms of S80). Never knew it had to do with the heat, but that makes sense now as I don't really remember it being as bad in the cooler months.

If only the pilot had said:

Clap your hands, everybody
If you got what it takes
'Cause I'm the MD88 and I want you to appreciate
That these are the brakes…

Just imagine the treatment the people who didn't pay for their F seat got!

I usually don't pay for F (This was a special occurrence). I already explained that I wrote this down because some would question why an FO gets an UG on ATL-DCA. I probably shouldn't have put that info as it was irrelevant but I'm not trying to ever be a DYKWIA.

Assumption is steel and horrible pad/brake deposits because of how the brakes are used... and can feel a lot of pilots that 'stab' the brakes over and over. Add heat outside, cold from cruising and steel/old setup and shakes...

I've been on some that feels like the plane is shaking apart.
