There's been reports in the GUC success thread, including at least one clearing directly from main cabin into D1 Suites.

yes, I posted in the other thread. Cleared 2 weeks our or so and set to fly this Sunday. I'm flying during Chinese New Year so the front probably is missing most business travelers. Looking today still 19 seats open.

Question for the group. As a silver medallion, would you rather fly the A350 economy (NRT-DTW) OR the 777 (HND-MSP) in economy and take the chance of getting upgraded to Comfort Plus ? What are the chances of getting upgraded?

I live by MSP and I'm going out of my way to fly DTW-NRT in a few days so I can go PS. If I were FO, I'd be doubly motivated to do so given the crapshoot for C+. That said, if booking Y no matter what, I'd just take whatever's the most convenient overall routing/schedule.

Thanks @GoAmtrak
I think I will stick with the A350 to try the new plane as the schedules are similar. Btw good award availability US-Japan at 54k miles +$51 RT (at least for May 2018) on the A350 both ways. PS its going for 90k ifrc.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind but I'd recommend the 777. The seats are a bit wider and you at least have a shot of C+ (albeit unlikely). If you value the slightly higher cabin humidity and elevation then by all means do the A350 but I've flown tons of 787 and never noticed a difference.

Flew N505DN today (yesterday?) from DTW-PEK. Nice equipment in the D1 Suites, although it would have been nice if they included a shallow cabinet to place wallet/camera/passport, etc. Though of course I lucked out and had the 1 suite with a broken IFE screen The crew quickly relocated me to an inferior seat, an aisle vs the window I had booked, with a working IFE system and gave me a handful of Skypesos for my troubles.
