Exclamation Guest restrictions at AMS lounge

From the 13th of June, Skyteam Elite Plus members cannot take a guest into the intercontinental KLM Crown Lounge, daily between 7.30 and 11 am, due to capacity restrictions.

Well that is very unfortunate. Is there an end date to this? Or a reason? Source?

If true, the reason is simple. Overcrowding. A bunch of US flights leave at that time. Add in Priority Pass, Skyclub membership holders, and STE+ and it gets crowded. No place to sit crowded. AMS has long needed an extra lounge on the international side. They should have kept the old lounge open as a second.

They do not accept Priority Pass. Regardless, what I meant by reason wasn't overcrowding itself, but if there was any specific reason for the overcrowding such as summer travel season or construction.

It may last until March 2019 as the lounge will be renovated and they fear overcrowding due to the reduced capacity.

Mistake on PP. Fly out of IAH a lot and have employees use their PP to access the KLM lounge there. For some reason thought all KLM lounges took it.

As for overcrowding. The lounge has been overcrowded during the reduced winter schedule. Additional summer flights will only make it worse.

However, summer travel is more likely to be leisure, including families. People are less likely to be elites, to have premium cabin tickets, or to be able to use the privilege of bringing (only) one guest.

As a percentage, sure, but in raw numbers are there fewer elites flying? Surely some of those leisure travelers are elites burning down miles, and I don't know of any significant dip in business travel in general during the summer (clearly some particular industries are slower in summer but others are busier in summer).

If anyone learns whether SkyClub members will still be able to bring in a guest during this period, please post it. Thanks.

It seems like KLM might employe some people who like, understand statistics and could have predicted this ahead of time and added capacity elsewhere at AMS.

Imagine if ATL had one skyclub for domestic and one for international. What a cluster.

That's assuming a passenger with Sky Team elite plus status can even find a spot for themselves. KLM's lounges at Amsterdam are overcrowded, plain and simple.

Delta desperately needs its own lounge, if only for business-class passengers.

Agreed. If there were any international airport that DL should have a Sky Club, it would be AMS (and CDG). Air France/KLM have several lounges in the United States, including at airports with Sky Clubs.

There are enough Air France lounges at CDG that I've never experienced an overcrowding issue to the extent of KLM's lounges at Amsterdam.

Moreover, KLM's lounges aren't even that nice, comparatively speaking. Sometimes you can't even get an agent to make a last-minute change or address an issue because the line of other passengers waiting for the service desk is too long. It's a complete mess.

The only good thing is that KLM is empowered to sell upgrades on Delta flights, which means sometimes you can score a business-class seat for a decent price an hour or two before departure.
