The article also says that "everything would have to go right – including the weather – for the contractor to earn the full incentive" but I'm sure C.W.Matthews can handle the weather. They're not Delta.
This would be amazing if they can make it happen, but I wouldn't underestimate the impact weather can have on construction. Currently building a new house, and while of course a drastically different pursuit, that one storm last Thursday set our schedule back about a week and a half.

Granted, our time vs. money calculation is probably the opposite of what's being applied to I-85, but even with all the monetary incentives and PITA my commute has become, I'd hope the construction company doesn't try to keep their guys working through lightning storms or genuinely severe storms.

Drove by Monday PM after landing at ATL. Waze said that was the fastest way. Looks like everything is removed AND some of the new pylons are going up.

Truly amazing. The engineers, workers and leaders should be very proud. The citizens of Atlanta rose to the occasion, adjusting traffic routes to keep what could have been catastrophic into something that was merely an inconvenience.

This was pretty neat to watch happen. For anyone interested, OxBlue had a live construction camera up the whole time and have published a time lapse video of the entire reconstruction process. Worth a couple minutes to watch to appreciate the scale of what the construction crews accomplished.

Millions in extra money for them goes a long way. Means they can spend 500K-1mil in overtime and run 24hrs a day and pocket the bonus. They could do this on every single project but the massive bonus doesn't exist. They don't want to pay overtime as that is not budgeting in their bids.

I used the new Northbound lanes heading home from ATL Saturday ~7pm.
