Paid upgrade to Delta One at gate for international?

I can't seem to find any info on this online (even though I'm sure there are dozens of threads, so please forgive me).

I just randomly looked at DTW to NRT today as I'm flying there in April in C+ and the 747 had a good 20+ seats empty in Delta One a couple hours before takeoff. Is there a way to buy a paid upgrade for a reasonable amount of money 500-700 range at the gate?

They sometimes do, though I have never seen Delta do it. I have seen AF and VS do it. Their prices from ATL to CDG and LHR respectively were around 800-1000 range.

I suppose Delta would do it if they had space.

Occasionally, you can get upgrade offers at check-in, but they are quite random. Your can always call and pay fare difference to upgrade, but the gate isn't going to sell D1 seats for that price.

I have seen it offered at check in online once. Look for the "at your service in Delta One" at the bottom of the screen with a price. It is rare to have an open D1 cabin on that flight. It consistently goes out full with paid passengers.

Never happens at the gate for intl, only online check in (and never at airport check in with an agent). Unless DL instructs GA's to begin actively selling these seats at the gate, there is little incentive for them to do so as they are looking at their non-rev friends who are hoping for D1 seats. Also, to start announcing cheap gate upgrades to D1 when you have pax sitting there who paid thousands of dollars for those seats is in poor taste and potentially harmful to the brand. At least when it's offered during online check in you don't have that issue.

A couple of years ago I was offered an upgrade at check-in for MSP-LHR. They wanted $500 or 70,000 miles. I opted to use the miles since I had an abundance of them at the time. It seemed like a good deal to me.

Just last month when I was flying back from Munich to ATL, the purser made an announcement during boarding that they still had plenty of seats in Comfort Plus and anyone in Economy Class could upgrade for $149. Even for a 10-hour flight, that seemed quite high to me since I have seen westbound transatlantic flights where they only asked for $99 if you upgraded on line anytime after ticket purchase. Don't know if anyone paid the $149 or not, as I was on a purchased ticket in Delta 1 on that flight.

As for an upgrade at the gate for an international flight, I doubt you will see that happen because it is not a quick and simple process and the agents are way too busy trying to get the plane loaded and out on time.

I don't think this is the issue. DL has offered gate upgrades on domestic routes for years. You don't see it offered that often as F is typically filled with paying and upgraded pax, but it does happen. I think this has more to do with that I mentioned above: the integrity of the brand as well as standy D1 seats being a very important perk for nonrevs.

A couple years back I was offered (at check-in) 100k miles or $1k to upgrade SEA-HKG. Those were the days I was awash with miles, so I took the offer. Yes it was expensive, but worth it to me.

This.

DL has gone to great lengths to create a premium brand separate and apart from domestic F which is chock full of free UG's and discounted this and that's. It may or may not be the ultimate in international luxury, but it is a cut above and DL wants to preserve that.

Having FA's hawking C+ for $149 onboard is one thing. But, imagine paying for what has been marketed to you as the ultimate luxury experience and having repeated announcements at the gate.

One thing to do it at check-in kiosks where paid D1 pax won't see it. In addition, if you are going to UG, might as well get the full package including baggage allowance if you need it and lounge if you don't have status.

I'm not saying make announcements at the gate - i'm talking about a discrete transaction where some says "I'm PM or GM, can I give you $500 or $700 or XXX for an upgrade if you have empty seats."

I purchased an upgrade for $ at the gate last summer for my wife (JFK-ARN). All the gate agent had to do was call the reissue desk for a fare and it was done in a few minutes.

BTW, for the NRSA haters who don't know what they're spouting about, her seat in Y was occupied by a NRSA.

Added via edit: It was not discounted.

D1 Passengers are not stupid. If Delta began selling international J upgrades for $300 at a kiosk, many would be willing to take the risk and purchase an economy or C+ ticket and attempt to purchase the upgrade. It doesn't matter whether it's at a kiosk or with the gate agent.

Flying via AMS on a KLM flight (flight number really, even if Delta metal or KLM metal the following has been true), they have some great opportunities to upgrade to D1/C/First which is usually a miles + Euro deal, I really wish Delta did things like that as I've seen empty D1 seats when I would have been willing to pay up for it (such as out of GPUs or on a client Y ticket).

On another note, I got my first ever IRROP (?) upgrade on Delta the other day, Xmas in fact, they "lost" my bag on the way to Seoul though so it was awesome but bittersweet overall. I connected to Korean Airlines, have done that a few times, do they offer upgrades like KLM?
