Observations Flying CDG/ATL Yesterday about CDG & ATL

Flying on DL CDG/ATL last night . . . .

1) At CDG - after check-in, proceeding directly to the SkyPriority / Acces No1 immigration line, I was stopped by a subcontract type employee, who instructed me to put my carry-on bags into what I thought was a sizing box. Then, he put the my second bag ON TOP OF the first bag, and I realized it was a scale!

He pointed to the digital readout, and told me that I had 25.x kilos, and I'm only allowed 18. I said, in Business Class??? He started to write my info down on a form on a clipboard. Then he asked to see my BP. He said - - "OH, DELTA!!" - - OK - - Go ahead!

2) Arriving at ATL around 8PM (I thought it would be slow at immigration at that hour) - WRONG! There were probably 200+ waiting to use the kiosks. Thanx A MILLION for whoever posted here about the "Mobile Passport" app. I BREEEEEZED right past everybody! It's probably just a tiny tad slower than GE!

3) ATL baggage - VERY slow! Since the immigration lines were so long, the bags were piling up on the belt, like 4 deep! There was a RedCoat looking for, I guess, a VIPs bag through the onslaught of bags. I mentioned to him that there wasn't much Priority in SkyPriority bags. He said - "I know - - sorry about that". I told him that some airports use a separate belt for SP bags. He said that they usually do.

4) Post Customs: Maybe 150 people in line for TSA. I BREEZED past everyone, due to the SkyPriority line . . . til . . . An older gentleman walked up to me and another pax, and YELLED AT US - - YOU CUT IN THE LINE! The line is "OVER HERE!" I told him that we used the Business Class line. He said - "I DON'T THINK SO!" You cut the line! I said - If you pay $5000 for a ticket, you get to use THIS line, and that I didn't make the rules, but Delta provides us with this benefit! That quieted him down a little!

5) We were delayed arriving for a few reasons, then the long wait for bags. My PIT flight was at 10:31 PM. The other guy I was chatting with was going to LAX at 9:39. This was at about 9:10 PM. He was concerned about making his flight - - but he said - - Oh, they'll hold it for me - - I'm DIAMOND!!! I said - "I don't think so!" Diamonds are a dime a dozen, and they don't hold flights.

I told him to check out FlyerTalk, that he'd enjoy it!

Thanx for reading!

1) Many foreign carriers have weight limits on cabin bags, including SQ, QF, and IIRC LH/LX. Sometimes this is strictly enforced.

2) I had been thinking about downloading mobile passport but when my GE was renewed relatively quickly earlier this summer, I decided to procrastinate. Maybe I should do it before my next trip just in case.

3) DTW has a SkyPriority belt. So does MSP sometimes.

4) At DTW (and for a while at MSP), a CBP officer collects the GE receipts before baggage claim, so logically there shouldn't be a separate GE customs exit line as they have no way to know......Still, I'm surprised at any airport, even ATL, would be allowed to have a separate business class customs line; I've never noticed this at ATL. Where is it? [Exceptions would be where airline staff escort VIPs through immigration and customs, as I've seen often at LAX TBIT and which DL was reportedly doing at JFK for a while, IIRC for Porsche passengers, but was forced to stop.]

BTW, on my last international arrival into ATL, there was a guy giving PreCheck "tickets" to connecting passengers who had used GE. It was really PreCheck lite, but was appreciated as my foreign airport (no OLCI available by law from my destination) printed boarding pass didn't say PreCheck. It avoided looking for a kiosk or agent to try reprinting the domestic boarding pass. At DTW I saw no PreCheck after bag drop so I kept my cart (to the annoyance of staff there) and went up in the elevator to the PreCheck area for originating passengers, which was much better. In this case, I already had PreCheck on the boarding pass from OLCI, although someone with SkyPriority probably would have been better off exiting and going up to departures level to use SkyPriority TSA security lanes.

Sorry--I'm very jet lagged as well as exhausted from trying to travel during the meltdown.

One other observation about CDG, if flying AF hope you don't need a wheelchair. They have one small little area for all of AF's Terminal 2 departures requiring going through 2E. (International) I had a need for one due to an accident. Showed up three hours before flight already checked in, with no bags (those got lost by DL), I barely missed getting kicked off my flight to TLV. The agents were rude, and basically said if you miss your flight, AF rebook you. Thanks. I was never even processed through the additional security that TLV flights get because of how rushed it was to get me to the gate.

I'm surprised by how often this happens to me (maybe once/twice a year?) where people accuse me of cutting the line because I use the priority line - I've learned to argue back, although not as well as you! The TSA guys minding the lines and directing traffic never seem to interfere.

The other day though there was a guy yelling at an elderly Korean couple flying business class and who didn't speak much English. I think they ended up at the back of the non-priority line.

Wow. That was the total opposite of my experience at CDG. Did you pre-arrange for transport with the SAPHIR services department at CDG? I had a last-minute accident that necessitated assistance through airports on my way home from an Italian vacation. My in-case-of-emergency contact made arrangements through DL and AF. When my flight landed at CDG, a SAPHIR agent was there to take me from the aircraft to the Sheraton CDG (I had to stay overnight). My ICE had also called the Sheraton to be sure they would have a wheel chair for my use. The SAPHIR agent asked what time I needed to be picked up to continue my flights. The next morning, another agent was waiting downstairs to take me. Went through Immigration and Security with no issue. He asked me where I wanted to wait - and I said the gate area. He had a van come and transport me to the gate area. When it was time to board, I was wheeled onto the flight.

I wish immigration had a separate business class line instead of it only being just Sky Priority. I was worried by the length of the line a few weeks ago - luckily once the passport was shown, the actual Premier business line was very short and quick.

AF started to weight carry-on bags at CDG for Economy class passengers, but the SkyPriority line was not affected by this until a few weeks ago, when they started to do so. I am glad to hear that they take into consideration the fact that DL doesn't have a carry-on weight limit like AF.

Good that the passport app worked for you. A few months ago, at JFK T4, those with the app were directed to the Diplomatic line, so they went through really quick. I wonder if this is the case at ATL now as well.

No, but, it was handled differently this time, compared to a couple of months ago, also at ATL . . . .

The first time I used it, which was late May, I had my phone out and ready to show to an officer. The DL agents who were directing people where to go, etc, RAISED THEIR VOICES and said - - - NO PHONES ALLOWED! PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY!

I told them that, I was using the Mobile Passport app - - and they SMILED, and said, OH! OK! Go right down here to THIS line!

It was a totally separate line that ran side by side with the GE line. Worked GREAT!

THIS time, it was VERY different! I had my phone out, and the signage for Mobile app was confusing, at best. I asked where the Mobile app line was, and, what they did, was, they personally ushered me to a spot BEYOND the cue for a kiosk, and where the hoards of people were using the regular kiosks, and OPENED one of those bank-type barrier thingys, and let me in, and told me to go to the officer at the END. It felt like the parting of the Red Sea!!! So, now, I'm mingled with the people who already used the kiosks, and had the receipts with their pictures in their hands. When I got to an officer, only 2 of the maybe 5 officers had the scanners to check my phone app, so, I was directed to a different officer - scanned my phone - and on my way!

So, in effect, the app enabled me to bypass the line to use a kiosk - AND bypass the actual kiosk itself, and I was dumped out in a very short line to see an officer after that. It SURELY saved me 30-45 minutes!

I recently got GE and haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. Sounds like I may have wasted my money, but, call me old fashioned, I'd rather not have to use my phone for anything if I don't have to -- I still prefer paper BPs!

25.x Kg???? Is that normal for people to have carry-on weighting over 55lbs?

Thanx for reading!
Ugh!
Arrived this morning on DL201 from JoBurg. Bags were stuffed up onto the conveyor belt (which I'm sure chewed the heck out of the sides of those bags...some were some very nice leather and canvass bags. You always see the nicest luggage on this flight! But I digress...)
A 777 needs two baggage carousels.

It also seemed like the luggage was delivered in the reverse order of priority. All the 'Priority' tagged bags showed up last. Of course, it's the 'Priority' passengers who got off the plane first and have GE, and were all standing around waiting for ~30 minutes watching the bags belonging to all the passengers standing in line at customs go 'round in circles. When the 'priority' bags finally did arrive, they got jammed up on the conveyor and piled up at the top of the carousel, out of reach.
