My wife and I use these fares for the cheap weekend trip where we don't feel like we get the value out of using our miles. So we have a 40 min flight from DTW to ORD save around $40 each. There is a chance we won't sit next to each other but I would imagine if we really needed to we could make it work on the flight. But we will take the savings and spend it on something else in Chicago rather than the flight.

Why should they restrict carryons?

Because Delta can expedite boarding process and monetize checked baggage. As most no-frill airlines they are competing with already charge for baggage, why shouldn't Delta? Here comes transatlantic first baggage fee. A whopping $60.

I'm sure traveling with a young child is difficult but I paid for main cabin partly because I'm particular about where I like to sit. Am I the a** for refusing to give up my seat?

I feel sorry for people on both sides of this woman. And she should have bought regular economy fair if she needed aisle so badly.

And yes, traveling with a young child is not easy (have 2 of my own, so speaking from experience), and this is why responsible people don't buy basic economy while flying with young children. Moreover, a responsible thing to do is to actually buy a seat for an infant and use FAA car seat in that seat.
