The standard boarding order at Delta goes like this:
  1. Passengers needing extra time or assistance
  2. Passengers traveling with infants or small children in car seats or strollers (which often seems to mean any child who can't grow a beard yet)
  3. PREM - First/Business and any Diamond Medallions
  4. SKY - Comfort + and any Gold/Platinum Medallions
  5. Zone 1 - Silver Medallions and Delta branded AmEx card holders
  6. Zone 2 - more or less everyone else
  7. Zone 3 - The people who must have really pissed someone off....

Ludicrous. I know this is the boarding order, and have accepted that this is the boarding order, but that somehow doesn't change the fact that seeing it written out makes me appreciate the ludicrousness like I've never seen it before. Why can't they just call the fifth Zone to board Zone 5???

I'm in my 40s and still can't grow a beard, had no idea I was eligible for pre-boarding! :D

would you feel better if they called it "zone red, zone blue, zone yellow"? What difference does it make?

I expect there would be lawsuits by people who are colorblind.

;)

I've flown SLC-HLN; it is about 75 minutes in duration; sadly, it is on a CRJ-200. Leaves out of concourse E in SLC.

Enjoy Helena. I've completed a personal project of visiting all 50 state capitals and photographing the inside and outside of each capitol building. Helena is a beautiful city, somewhat in a bowl with mountains on all sides (the Continental Divide is on US 12 about 20 miles west of town). The main street is called "Last Chance Gulch".

The capitol is very nice; the statuary there honors Senator Mike Mansfield and his wife; also Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress, who served two non-consecutive terms (1917-1919 and 1941-1943) and voted against the declaration of both World Wars; and, in front of the capitol, Thomas Francis Meagher, a 19th century Irish patriot who was exiled by the British to Tasmania, then made his way to our shores, served on the Union side in the Civil War, and was appointed territorial governor of Montana, ultimately drowning in the Missouri River.

There is an interesting juxtaposition of religion there. St. Helena Cathedral has to be in anyone's list of top 10 Catholic cathedrals in the USA. Less than a mile away is a mosque-like structure constructed by the Shriners, the Algeria shrine club, now operated as a civic auditorium.

Unseasoned travelers in Zone 1 (credit card holders) think they are boarding first. Zone 2 passengers think they are actually in the second group. After all, what should they expect given they are in Zones 1 and 2? They crowd the entrance, not realizing they are blocking access to the majority of passengers, who are boarding in one of the more-than-half zones that board before Zone 1. Calling those Zones 5 and 6 might have a Raid-like impact on gate lice.

Thank you for the excellent information. I knew FT would come through. I'm going to try to cancel the exit row upgrade on the CRJ although guessing I'm out of luck for that.

They made you pay extra for an exit row seat on a CRJ? :td:

That should be all kinds of illegal. As mentioned above, in these planes the exit row has the same pitch as any other seat, but the seat cushions have almost no padding, so it is a net loss even without shelling out $$.

Maybe you'll find a sympathetic agent who will help you. I would ask them what they'd expect if they paid extra money for an exit row (which carries the general perception of having better leg room, and I doubt DL's site steers actively away from that on CRJ plane descriptions), only to be served a turd sandwich with no padding.

Is there any evidence this is actually the case? Human nature is going to be the same for these people whether their piece of paper has a 2 or a 5 on it.

As for "blocking" the gate, well, I've had to say "excuse me" once or twice but I've never been prevented from boarding a plane. This is 90% a problem invented by busybodies.

I engage with these people sometimes when they say something like, "Well, I'm in Zone 1." It's happened to me enough times to believe there are a substantial number of people who believe Zone 1 is first.
