The way to avoid volunteering for $0 is to not volunteer for $0. Don't volunteer without a clear understanding of what you are going to get in return. If it's not to your liking, don't do it.

I've posted this before, but about a year ago my wife and I were suppose to return DFW-SLC-MCO. The GA called us up and asked if we were willing to fly directly home on AA and get in 3 hours early. We said sure (of course, this is not available anymore on AA). She gave us $800 voucher each and we got the credit for our scheduled flights without even asking or having to follow up.
