The other shoe? 30 more A321s coming to Delta

So, with up to 125 C-Series coming, we had to know there would be a follow-on order for A321s or 739s. Looks like it will be A321. This makes sense, as essentially you split the MD-88 fleet and replace under-performing routes with CS-300s and over-performing routes with 738s/A320s, which you then replace with more A321s. This will put Delta's A321 fleet at 75.

Confirmation expected at the board meeting at the end of the month.

Not sure I understand this being sad. A321 is preferable to 737's if only slightly because of the wider cabin.

I love some good old jingoism as much as the next person, but do you have any statistics to support that attitude? Last I checked, the A32x series actually had a lower fatality rate per mile flown than the (non-Classic) 737s.

125 CS300s don't quite replace the 117 MD-88s. I was expecting a top off order to the A321s as Airbus can build a few more before shutting down the CEO line in favour of the NEO. DL's A321's are different from those at AA in that they use CFM engines and do not have auxiliary tanks installed. The CFM engines are cheaper and better for shorter routes, which DL plans on doing with the A321 fleet. Without the auxiliary tanks, DL will use the A321s on routes up to 1,500 miles and use the refurbished 757s and dreaded 739ERs on longer routes. DL was planning on having 140 739ERs before cancelling 40 of those orders after the pilot contract rejection but re-ordered 20 more recently. I wouldn't be surprised if DL adds back the other 20, especially if they're ordering 75 CS100s instead of CS300.

That would be an interesting argument - if you made it as a statement of fact, citing sources, rather than posing it as a question.

Does this mean that there will 739 order made in December is gone?

I just hope that the A321 is nicer than the A319 and A320. Those planes look really ghetto inside.

No, DL needs those 739ERs and probably should reconsider and re-order the other 20 it cancelled to help replace the MD-88s. DL was fortunate it was able to hold onto the MD-88s for this long. Volotea is dumping their 19 717s. I'm sure DL would love to add those to help dump more 50 seaters. If DL goes ahead with the CSeries order, the E-190 delivery is likely toast.

It's really about what they decide to do with the interior design. The legacy 'new' US Airways A321 do not look very different from the A319/A320, but the American Airlines A321T (LAX-JFK/SFO-JFK primarily) is a really neat plane.

Agreed. I've always hated the 737, it's like the CRJ of mainline aircraft. Of course, give me a 757 over any of them. If we have to have more narrowbodies, I'd much rather be on an A321 than a crappy 738 or 739.
