500fpm is geared towards a CRJ. Talking with another pilot at DL, 767 would normally be 1000-1500fpm. At most 2500'fpm. However 5000'fpm would still be a good bit outside of normal and would require overriding certain safeties. The only time it should be achieved according to him is 1)when the pressurization system has failed and emergency descent is needed, or 2)when the pilot has momentarily lost control of the plane.

Even the time and altitude lost don't equal 5000'fpm. 18000' loss of altitude over 9-10 minutes is 2000'fpm tops, not 5000' fpm.

If you look a the Flight Aware track, 5000'/pm was for about two minutes and then the rate was less. Over the about 9 minutes the average was about 2000' per minute. I've been on a lot of planes and I've never seen a descent like yesterday. It never felt out of control, just the pilot trying to get down in a hurry. The graph tells the story.

If you Google the rate of descent for the 767 1500-1800 seems fairly standard.
Again, I'm not a pilot, not claiming to be. Just telling you what I experienced and what Flight Aware is reporting.

That descent rate isn't out of the question at all.

2260 SEA-ATL, we had some moderate chop in the same area. Pilot had already warned us that it was going to be rough. I'm not a meteorologist but I'd say it was probably due to the big storm system pushing up through the south central US.

Just got off SEA-DTW and it was pretty choppy from about the Dakotas all the way across Lake Michigan.

What "certain safeties" would have to be "overridden" to descend at 5000fpm in a 767, a "good bit outside of normal"?

Please be specific. Thanks.

I'm off to SLC tonight. Seems like there are still a few left over pockets. Will report back. The map currently is showing moderate chops in the BOS area and then in heart of the midwest.

A great resource is www.aviationweather.gov

The Forecasts section has some cool stuff in the Turbulence section, and the PIREPs are good too.

Ok, we've hit the storms. We're really shaking around and the engines are at "takeoff" thrust. Only at 22,000ft.
