Fourth bag pricing for PM/DM
Everybody probably knows this page well:
http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...p/checked.html And I've seen this too... http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_...ip/excess.html But I'm wondering...have any PMs or DMs checked a fourth (or more) bag lately? Are you charged $200? Is there any discount on this fee for medallions? Anyone been charged less, like $25, for their first paid bag / fourth checked bag? Maybe just wishful thinking, but I'm about to move long distance and want to be sure I know what I'm getting into, before I show up at the airport. |
Nope. I've been told the fee per 1st/2nd/3rd/4th bag is always either the full price or waived if eligible. There's no discount being elite, or it being the 1st "paid" bag.

Asked and told the same. 3rd / 4th bag is charged as listed.
Having the 1st and 2nd (maybe 3rd) waived does not reduce the subsequent bag's fee. If you have lots of stuff to move, flying them with you might not be the most economical way to 'ship' your stuff. Also, multiple bags makes collection at destination airport and subsequent transportation (from airport) another challenge to consider. |
The way I get around that is via Media bags.
I do own a photography company, so it actually applies: 4th thru 25th bag, up to 100lbs each, $50 per bag Unless I'm traveling with others, where we each get my Diamond allowance: 3 @ 70lbs, I'll use that up before pulling out my media badge. |

Yeah, I'm a video producer & regularly travel with more cases than I can carry myself. To the OP's question, last trip I was checking 4, had already showed DM BP, hadn't gotten my media creds out yet, and the bag agent was saying "$150 for the 4th" (think it was $150. Maybe he said $200). Anyway, down to $50 w creds. Did a TATL return last week on DL tik, KLM metal, and got roughed up for 85 euros for overweight case. Dude was very apologetic, said I've got to apply each time to KLM for media exception. Ugh. |
Off topic, but when I moved to Japan, I flew Y with UA (awful). One of my two bags was overweight, so they told me it would be cheaper to pay for a third bag (I had a spare duffel with me) than to pay the overweight fee. There ended up being a snafu and I had a 24 hour delay. I checked in online for the second time, and was able to check a fourth bag for free. I was very pleased with myself, but the gate agent gave me a mouthful when I asked her to check that the bags I had left overnight were being loaded on to the plane. "Why do you need four bags?" she said. I told her it was none of her business
A few years later I moved to the UK, and posted a few boxes to myself via USPS. They arrived but were slightly damaged, so I was able to successfully apply for a refund of the hundreds of dollars I paid in postage. |
