SDS then SDC?

Ticketed: JFK-LAX-LAS, arriving much later than I (now) want to.

SDC for earlier flights unavailable. So I did SDS.

I got on a 9:30 AM flight (scheduled to arrive in LAX at 1:20 PM). It didn't look too good for LAX-LAS flights, but I could try for SDS on each of them until the one I was ticketed on came along.

But then I had an idea: there were connections from LAX to LAS that would get me in earlier than I was scheduled to. Could I SDC my second segment to a connection, after flying the first segment on SDS?

Sorry, I don't have an answer. I caught the 1:10 flight out of LAX, so didn't have to try for it.

Yes you can. Using SDS earlier doesn't change your options after that flight.

I wonder how much of a mileage run can be constructed that way, flying the first segment, SDCing to a connection, flying one segment, SDCing to another connection, etc.

I think your route at every step is supposed to be legal for your fare rules.

I have no doubt that it's supposed to be. I have actual experience that it doesn't necessarily have to be.

Why does it still surprise you that most things are YMMV with DL?

It doesn't. I was just pointing out that what the rules are and what happens do not necessarily coincide.
