A new one for me...

So I go to board my LAX-SEA flight and there is somebody in my seat, 2C. I ask politely, "Excuse me, do you have 2C."

He replies "No, I have 2D."

"That is 2C, my seat"

"No it isn't, it's 2D."

I am a little bit at a loss, never having heard that sort of reply. So I just point the legend and say "here it says 2D is by the window."

He then grumbles, "Well every plane I've been on this seat is D." But he moves.

I figured he probably bought an FCM fare and was used to the back (where D is often an aisle ). But as he raced up the jetway ahead of me, he had a DM cowbell on his backpack.

Why travel is an adventure

Just start singing the A,B,C song.

It is amazing to me how many people can't figure out the sequencing of the letters. Moving from right to left why would D come before C, ever?

In fairness, many airlines do have the right aisle on a four across as "2D" using A/C and D/F (I think some airlines do it because it creates consistency - all As & Fs are windows, all Cs & Ds are aisles, all Bs and Es are middle seats).

One such airline is the major player on SEA-LAX/LAX-SEA - AS:
http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Ala...-900_C_new.php

Meanwhile on AA:
FC uses A/B and E/F, omitting C and D:
http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Ame...737-800_V2.php

The one odd part is that he had a DM tag so you'd think he's flown DL more but could have been flying AS and crediting to DL. So disgruntled passenger who was trying to "sneak" their way from a window to an aisle or someone who truly thought they had selected an aisle seat? Hard to tell.

See above. While the pax with boarding pass for 2D while occupying 2C was "wrong", it's understandable, especially if one's brain is in a sort of "auto mode" when traveling and the guy occupied a seat out of an acquired habit from a different airline that used a slightly different system.

At least he didn't try to get you to take the window.

Nearly the exact same thing happened to me a few months ago, except the other passenger was sporting PM tags, not DM! Sounds like the same guy!

If someone was rarely in the front cabin, the confusion could be. It does make some sense to be a,c on one side and d,f on the other.

Do you know there is a DL plane that has 1a and 1K in the first row?

He only flys Air Canada CRJ200's - this also explains why he is so miserable

D is the aisle seat for a lot oF airlines. (A/C and D/F) Thus I can see a traveler even DM who's been on other airlines recently making this mistake.

Yep. As I pointed out above, AS is one such carrier. Could very well be that the person with the 2D seat assignment thought that 2D was the aisle seat on the right side of the aircraft and that OP with 2C should have been sitting in the aisle seat on the left side of the aircraft.

Had a similar experience years ago. I was sitting in 6C and some guy insisted 6D was the aisle. I was stubborn and told him I'd be happy to get up so he could sit in his window seat. As he was getting into the seat, I realized with whom I had just picked a fight: Evander Holyfield. Yep, I'll pick a fight with a world heavyweight champ if he tries to steal my aisle seat and make me sit in the window seat.

-------------

I once told two passengers (together) that I seated them in row 3AB. One of them (seriously) asked me if anyone was in between them. Talk about a dumbfounded moment; I was speechless. All I could do was give "that" smile.

Then A-E-K, then A-D-F-K, and A-K upstairs.

And the A330s have 1C/1G, followed by A-C-G-J.

Meanwhile the 767s and 777s use A-B-C-D.

Go figure.

Even if it's different on other airplanes, the little seat chart graphics above every row are fairly clear which seat is the window and which is the aisle. It never ceases to amaze me how often people are in the wrong seat.
